I decided to install voltmeters on both of my 650’s. After looking at the available options I settled on this one, they are available almost everywhere online and very inexpensive. They come with a piece of double sided adhesive for sticking them in place.

After looking at all the possible mounting locations, I decided on a rather low key location, especially on my XS2, I didn’t care for the look of a modern digital meter next to my old school gauges. I chose to mount both of them off of the steering head pinch bolt. I cut up a scrap piece of aluminum bracket I had laying around.

A similar but slightly modified one for my ‘77D.

I was talking to Jim about good locations for tapping into a power supply, I had thought of going inside the headlight bucket. He suggested the horn, it’s easy to get to and the brown wire is hot when the key is on.
Thanks Jim! I pulled the wires for the horn off and soldered a little pig tail plug in for the voltmeter.

Plugged in and I ran the ground to a point on the frame , right next door.

I took my multimeter and checked the readout on the voltmeter against the actual voltage at the battery posts. There is about a half a volt drop after running through the wiring harness, but I figured that would happen. It’s plenty good enough to monitor my charging system. I’m calling this a success!

Bob, its spliced in to the horn circuit so what happens when you push the horn button ?

I tapped into the brown wire, that wire is hot any time the key is on. When you push the horn button it completes the ground circuit.
I didn’t try honking the horn, but it shouldn’t have any effect.

You might get a momentary drop of a half volt or so and then recover back to batt. voltage. If you weren't looking at it (not recommended in situations requiring the horn), you wouldn't notice.
Looks good Bob.

Nice looking farkle! How weatherproof is the voltmeter?

I attached the wires to the volt meter via the battery maintainer wiring
Per gggGarys suggestion I just used another plug in to match the one going to the maintainer
can't go wrong it goes right to the battery

Had a look on fleabay for this item. Gotta laugh at some of the ads. The one I looked at said the dimensions were 5.7 x 2.9 x 1 cm, then added a disclaimer that the buyer should allow a 1-3 cm difference in dimension due to manual measurement!

Just ordered 4 of them. Expecting to get them within 80 days

Yeah, I should’ve noted, they are widely available, but most are shipped from China, I shopped for a distributor in the USA and found one in California. I paid a little more for the convenience of having it sooner.

One other mention I should make, I got the idea for this particular voltmeter after seeing it on @thuban , he put one on his bike and mounted it on his handlebar using the mount from a bicycle handlebar reflector.

Mailman, any concern when turning the bars to full lock position?
Did you consider using a later threaded steering neck top bolt as an attachment point, so a meter can be mounted in the center?

You know, I remembered someone had done that, but I couldn’t remember who. That’s a nice installation!
I was careful to check clearance when I mounted them, I tried several full lock turns, it clears the tank by about an inch.

I like the bar mount combos, volts, temp (in C), and USB, with a switch on the back. If it had the rubber strap type mount it'd be perfect. I have it on about 2 feet of wire with an SAE connector (plugs in to charge port) quick transfers bike to bike. Madness also has the built in voltmeter.

Where are you sensing temperature? Right at the cylinder head or off of the jugs? Surface contact thermocouple? Interested in doing this.
