As long as it's a type A... and your bike's wired for a type A... yes, it should work. The XS650 only puts out about 20A (on a good day ;) )
Great! I will try to do the how reg / rec type "A" I have read that it is more reliable than the expensive charging systems that are on the market, in addition that learning to know how it works is invaluable.

TAKE NOTE............

all the information i posted yesterday (quote below) is period correct for a points bike...........

If the Stator from an 80 or newer bike has been put onto a points bike then either one of 2 things have to be done......

1: The wiring on the Stator brushes has to be changed so that one of the brushes is a ground, (black wire) to use with a separate Regulator, (B type), and rectifier used on a points model bike

2; if the brushes, (on the Stater), are still wired as per an 80 or later type, (power to both brushes), then nylon screws have to be added to the brush screws to isolate the stater and an 80-83 (Type A) SS combined Reg/Rect is used in conjunction with points

You have a points model...............

Jim...............??????.............where is the question asking for a pic of the Brushes on that stator..........No you arn't perfect but with power comes great responsibility so posting about A type systems on a points model is giving the wrong information. Now you have other members backing up on your recommendations, (they also have an 80 and later bike), so what is the OP now going to do???????

Do some searches on 3 Phase Rectifiers or automotive regulators..........these are preferred over solid State Reg/Rect...........need to do some basic wiring your self

.Here is a link to a Points, Type B Solid State Reg/Rect......http://www.xs650.com/threads/wiring-in-a-70-79-combined-reg-rect-to-a-points-model-xs650.52339/ ....Points, type B,combined SS Reg/rect should have 2 wiring tails as per the wiring/pics in the thread

post 2........has a few different automotive regulators that can be used for a points bike

http://www.xs650.com/threads/3-phase-rec-worth-a-shot.53317/#post-568095
Post 8......shows the factory wiring for the Regulator and Rectifier. Shows how a SS Reg/ Rect would need 2 sets of wiring tails to accommodate 2 separate components
post 15.......Shows a pic of a 3 Phase rectifier and automotive type B regulator wired up

Well Skull, I guess I can yell too....
The stator pic is the pic he put up a while back in this thread. I put it back up there to remind him it's an 80 or newer stator. Understand Skull? He's got a friggin basterdised charging system. If it's all the same to you, I felt it necessary to point it out to him. So what is the OP gonna do now? Hopefully he'll investigate and figure out which type of regulator he needs.

I have a point system however the charging system and all the wiring apparently is from a later model (I don't know why the previous owner would do it that way).

Edit: I was in a foul mood when I wrote this... no excuse, I know.

Jim PM Sent.

5Twins post on Page 1 and 2 point out problems with the stater that has been on the bike, the wiring to the brushes..........those issues need to be sorted..........pics of your regulator and rectifier or combined Reg/Rect, (which ever), that was on the bike would be helpful as well...........

Hey! Here I am still trying to advance the project, although this virus situation has been tough. Now I will review the brake system, here are some photos.

You may not be able to use that pad retaining screw included in the pad kit. The original wasn't threaded all the way and had the end turned down. That new fully threaded screw may not fit into the hole on the brake pad backing plate. You may have to re-use the original screw or mod the new one by filing the threads off the end .....

Also, it appears you may have the spring clip installed backwards in the caliper. The tab that bends down should be on the outside, towards the piston. You can see it here in the parts drawing .....

Thank you. I will work on it.

Difficult situation that brought us the COVID-19. I've been busy doing a little bit of tuning work, this is the result.
I have also added a new wheel, chain and fuel lines.

Hey!
I have been putting km to my xs, so I have not updated my progress, however yesterday I noticed that my right side was pouring gasoline through the filter. Immediately look for the carburetor problem. I found that my float had a leak, so I plan to buy new. I have previously ordered parts with nichecycle, does anyone know if those floats they have on their page are good? (I know I should buy oem, but shipping puts me in trouble because of my location).

Both floats already have repairs, I would not like to have to battle with them during a trip or stay on the side of the road if they fail. I'm just looking for some recommendations for good replacements to continue my ride. I have seen some links where they compare the floats from cruzinimage and they have some differences compared to oem. Will those little details matter?
Thanks!
