An introduction and question

OK all I've got a question on a late model starter/lighting relay. (yeah I'm starting to sort out the electric components, their mounting and wiring things up)

Courtesy of Jim from a previous post I have a question on this. On a wiring diagram from one of my manuals it shows the Blue wire going to the Reserve Lighting Unit. Question is do I need to include the reserve unit or can I simply run the Blue wire to the headlight switch?

You can just run it direct to the h-light switch. Most people just bypass the RLU anyway. For that matter, if you run a light on/off switch, you don't even need the light relay.

That drawing is of the starter/headlight safety relay. You want the starter portion. It cuts power to the starter once the motor starts so you can't accidentally engage it. You probably don't want the headlight portion at all. It's an auto-on relay, turning the headlight on when the motor starts.

Been thinking about this whole switch thing and since my XS1B build includes putting an electric start motor with late model regulator/rectifier and TCI ignition I've decided to use later model handlebar controls. Right side with kill switch, starter button and if I can find one with a headlight on/off switch. When I put electric start back on the orange bike I cut off the starter safety relay which saved a lot of room I think it is something worth doing on the XS1B build. I have begun fabricating the mounting that will hold most of the new parts. Once I get it sorted out I'll post some pics. Thanks to all for the help on this.

1978 was the last year that the right switch assembly had a headlight on-off switch in it. You might also be able to use one off another model like the XS500, 400, or 360, possibly the early XS750 triples as well.

About eight weeks back I had to spend a couple of days in St. Louis and to occupy some down time I pulled up Craig's List to see if any XS stuff was available. And to my surprise there was a non-running, titled 1980 XS650G listed for $350. A couple of texts later I was on my way. As is probably all too common there was a host of extra parts to include: an extra engine, set of mag wheels, an extra set of spoke wheels

and a mess of new service parts. For me it was a no brainer. Took my wallet out, counted out the $350 I had withdrawn and asked if that would cover everything. Minutes later with signed title in my hand we were loading up the Xterra with all the extra parts.

So my original plan was to get it running and have a rider while working on my XS1B resto/mod, but life had other plans. A week after my St. Louis trip I had a stroke that took my right peripheral vision in both eyes. And to just add another layer of frustration a week later I had a second stroke that took out more fields of vision. So where do I stand with a new bike to get running and the resto/mod of the XS1B? Simple choice really, I gave my son the 80 as his new tohim project and I’ll keep plugging away on the XS1B. And he let no grass grow under his feet. We put together a diagnostic/PM checklist and after a couple of weeks and a few more questions he pulled up to the garage on his running 80. There are some further fine adjustments to be made but it does run.

Jake sorry to hear about health problems, I've had a few myself this year but they would not be a pimple on the butt of yours.

I notice the 1980 does not have side covers over the air cleaners. I have a pair of 1982 covers off a Heritage Special gathering dust here I would let go cheap if they would fit on the 1980.

1980 Special II has metal side covers that match the '78 & '79 Specials.

Best wishes, Jake.

Raymond and /ken' thanks for the kind thoughts.

Ken, an extra engine and missing side covers. Ya just gota love these o;e bikes. I did put a want ad in the classifieds for a right cover. The left one he has uses the decal. In looking at Partzill not sure the 82 will fit. Thanks for the offer though.

I knew a few here would know. The offer is open to anyone who has a need for them, prefer to sell to someone who actually needs the as opposed to someone hoping to make money by reselling.

Sorry to hear about your medical misfortune, Jake.
I might have the side covers you need; you need both L & R, correct?

I'll dig thru the boxes in the morning.

Look in the European market for headlight switches on the bars; they were fitted for several years after they disappeared from the US models.
