yes the 83 Heritage special used the 48 - 64 spoke wheels so either match the rims or trade them for 36 spoke wheels /hubs. there are folks that like the HS wheels.
 
Would an 80 front hub be able to lace up to a 21 inch rim from mikes. as well would the rear hub be able to lace to a 16 rim.
I have a 78 with cast and want to switch to spokes that size. working on finding some hubs that would work.
 
yes any XS650 disk front hub will work with a mikes rim with the same number of spoke holes.
There may be a bit of spoke bending involved in fitting a 16" rear rim to a hub that had an 18" rim on it.
Any time you start lacing "generic" rims some "adjustment" of the rim spoke hole angles may be needed.
 
I would stick with a '74 or newer front hub. The '72 and many '73 hubs didn't have a bolt-on disc.
 
The '80 model still used the standard 36 spoke hubs.
 
If you have a '78 w/ mags, the rear is most likely a disc brake. There are a few other items you'll need to make the drum conversion. The pivot shaft for the brake pedal is different. The swingarm also has a different mounting point for the torque arm from the brake plate. Your disc swingarm mounts it on top, the drum swingarm mounts it on the bottom. You can mod your disc swingarm (cut, relocate, weld the bracket) or just swap in a drum swingarm.
 
In the States, the '83 model was one of those Heritage models. They had the "more spoke" wheels (64 front, 48 rear). I'm not sure about the Canadian version. You'd have to ask the guy how many spokes they have I guess.
 
it would be from a gentleman in the states. another question then, would it be a 16 inch rear drum and 18 inch front disk.
would I be wise to get him to ship me the hubs with brake drum and disk for weight /cost reasons.
I'm looking for a hardtail with a 2.5 /16 rear and skinny 19 front look

I do not have a drum brake hub in front of me to measure or compare. Is it possible to use a drum brake hub without the brake shoe assembly on the hub, with a disc brake setup?

No.

Sorry, I can't quite visualise what you are suggesting. Front or rear hub? Either way, on first thoughts, the size of the drum brake housing would get in the way of the disc and caliper. Probably anything can be done given sufficient ingenuity, engineering and cash but . . .
 
The rear hub. Just by looking at my disc assembly and online drum hubs, its appears that with a spacer between the disc armature and the bearings with provide enough space to clear the housing or perhaps no spacer, I am just spit balling. Type in "rear wheel disc brakes" and search. After you read all 7 pages go buy the Omar`s kit or make one like it. Using a drum rear hub sounds like a nightmare about to happen. Just my :twocents:. Good luck with your project.:thumbsup:
 
Can a 2.5" x 18 36hole rim be safely run in the rear of an early bike...70-72 ? If so what size tire is not too wide or too skinny for that matter. Tires are part of the ride system/ suspension. TIA
