This was done to these headers, (years ago long before XS650 forums), after the mufflers rusted out......

They are leaking around the joint so was wondering.............

What is the best, less messy, (if possible), sealer you guys use ??

how loose is the muffler over that? if it's sloppy mebbie some copper sheet? If it's fairly tight try muffler cement? Used to be able to get asbestos sheet, prolly not anymore.:laugh2: but some sheet gasket might work.

Would an OEM muffler joint gasket work there? The muffler joint was leaking on my XS2 and I replaced it with a NOS part. It was a really tight fit and totally sealed it up again.

This is the 83 in NZ.........Communication depends on the atmospheric conditions:laugh:
Thanks guys.

Loose apparently with a spacer that is stuck...........Copper sheet could work.........

I've used sealant meant for wood stoves with good results.

Good thought

The XX2 ones are smaller OD/ID that the 74-79 ones. I don't think the 74-79 ones will work either as the extension welded on the end of the header looks to be bigger than the header..........found one for a good price on fleecebay but the postage was 80 odd $'ssssss:eek:......did find a reasonable pair for about $35 postage included........

Can get the 74-79 ones from geof's XS for about NZ$20 + freight.......

For use in valves and pumps, this thin, flexible tape is made from high-purity graphite with no fibers or binders that could contaminate your process line. Graphite is self-lubricating, plus it provides outstanding performance over a wide temperature range.

Adhesive-back tape stays in place during installation.

you might check a plumbing supply house for graphite valve packing tape
 ;)

Good idea........

My Delkovic system arrived with a tiny tube of red high-temp silicone sealant, so I immediately went down the farmers' store and got a proper tube of the stuff for fireplaces and flues. Same stuff, no danger of running out of it now.
It's held up well, far better than I expected.

Yeah nice, some good suggestions here. Need to free up spacer from muffler for a start! I like the sound of high temp silicon but will also ask our local plumbers regarding graphite tape.
Cheers

I worked for years turning wrenches at Midas... we used muffler cement .. mud.. came in a large tube... think tooth paste tube by 5 sizes... smaller tubes available. Smear it on.. slide pile on... heat cured it.... when.. if.. it came tome to remove the pipe... it wasn't too difficult to break loose. I believe most auto parts stores sell it..or visit your local muffler shop.

Update on this, decided to run with exhaust cement simply because it’s fit for purpose. Also discovered it expands upon heat/curing so helps to plug any gaps. Worked well, cheers!

I’m looking for the best high temp sealer for my exhaust on heater. The flange gets to about 550-575F and this is close to the max temp for most RTV sealants. Anyone have experience with a sealer that rated for higher temps? Permatex has one that’s supposed to be good up to 750F intermittent. I’d rather use a silicone sealer in case I have to take the joint apart. I‘m concerned muffler cement may be more “permanent”.
