Today is Veteran's Day in the US and as some may know, here in Canada today is known as Remembrance Day and we thank all of our vets and those of our Allies who served and sacrificed to keep us free and safe all these decades.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, when the Armistice in World War One took effect, all Canadians stand and observe a moment of silence to remember those who have died. The famous poem about poppies in Flanders fields written by Canadian military physician John McCrae is recited and it never fails to bring a tear to most listeners.

In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Even though November 11 is many months away, this morning I was greeted by this YouTube video by the History Guy - an incredibly talented and prolific content provider from Illinois. It tells the story of how Lt.Col. John McCrae of Guelph Ontario wrote the beautiful poem "In Flanders Fields" on this day back in 1915:
