I recently picked up a very nice 1980 XS650 rig, with a Ural chair. I want to de-link the two, and use the chair on one of my Guzzis, but the Yamaha has no side or center stand. (and its much too nice to lean up against a tree! :)) I have been casting about, looking for a replacement sidestand on Fleabay, but without much luck, as there seem to be a variety of stands out there. I have no idea what the original stand like. Were there in fact several different types of sand? Can someone please tell me, for example, if a 1978 or 1979 or 1981 side stand will work on my 1980?
Thanks!

Yes, there were several different stands used during the production run, about 4. You need the last version which came along in '77 ......

As you can see in the drawing, besides the spring of course, there are several other associated parts you'll need to mount it. Probably the most important is the bracket that has the spring post on it. Ideally, shop for one that includes all these parts .....

Yeah, I am keeping an eye out for the whole assembly. All the ones I have seen have been just the stand and the spring. Thanks. Anyone on the list here have a good stash of parts?

Give Sport Wheels.... Jordon MN ... a call... a motorcycle boneyard.... they still have a few Xs units lay'n in the weeds....

I would consider getting a centerstand as well, very handy for servicing and long term parking. Again, the early ones are different. You would need a '74 or later one .....

There is an issue with these stands though, the tangs tend to break off, lol .....

As part of the repair, it's best you add a brace. I brace them now even before they break .....

The factory was aware of this issue and added bracing to the stands on the last few model years. You might want to be on the lookout for one of them .....

I like the KZ650 side stand. I can’t remember how much fab was involved but it wasn’t to awefully hard to put on an XS. There are two side stands I’ve dealt with and don’t like. The XS and the Honda CB. I get the point of tangs and tabs to clear exhaust but....the stance. The late 60’s Triumph side stands make sense. Simple cast and like a bicycle. Love em. The KZ is like this.

The early clevis mount sidestands may not be very nice but I really like the later stand that pivots on the large round post. It's very easy to add a grease fitting so you can keep it well lubed and then it works soooo smoothly .....

It's also very easy to build the foot up with steel plate to lengthen the stand some when you add longer than stock rear shocks and the bike leans over too much .....

I think it's one of the nicest sidestands I've ever had on any bike.

Hey, guys, I just got my stateside all reassembled and discovered I left off the lock washer. Have this NOT GOOD suspicion I'm going to have to pull the whole thing and start over. Found a really good pic of this side stand installed on another thread -- now I can't find the thread again. /headdesk. My '83 the spring doesn't sit like this at all, though, which was what I was asking on the other post when I hit the wrong button and closed the forum. NOW of course I can't find that pic. Anyone got a good clear shot of the '83 variety with the crimping lock washer installed? (On mine the peg for the spring is part of the funky channel thing for the neutral safety switch).
