The deals come to those who wait...

Shibaura SD1400B, aka a Ford 1300. Shibaura made Ford's sub-compact diesels for several years, may still.

14hp two cylinder diesel, 4x2 (possibly 4x3, won't know til I get it running) transmission. 3 point hitch, 2WD and some SERIOUS Rice tires on the back.

Front tires are shot, rear wheels are locked up. Assuming it's brakes rusted to the drums but won't know until I get it apart. Antifreeze looked good, rear end oil looked good (good enough that I saved it and will filter and re-use) crank case was full. I'll drain the diesel and replace it along with a new filter of course. Oil bath air cleaner. Cup was empty, hope it didn't run a lot that way. 380 hours on the meter. Good straight tin with just a little surface rust. Seat shot, looks like a cobble job anyway.

All-in-all, for $250 I think I did okay unless I find something serious internally. They did say they had the engine running but "it wouldn't move". Any number of reasons that could be.

First goal is to get the rear end freed up.

Ohhhhh boy.....I'm seein' a serious cruisin' machine for those hot Friday nights in downtown Prospect Harbour!

All seriousness aside, PLEASE keep this thread up DE - we're all headed for the indoor/boring season and this looks like it will be fun!

Pics didn't come through DE. See 'em now.

A very interesting project DE. Be fun to follow something different from Yamahas for a while. You seem to live in a tractor rich environment, I’ll bet they’re fun to mess around with.

Agreed Bob - and for working on old tractors in northern North America, I would guess that the most useful tools to have are:
  • a BFH and a;
  • flame wrench.

Well, I was partly right. The dual expanding disc brake WAS bound up pretty hard plus beaucoup brake dust everywhere, but the main problem was that the outer axle bearing was toast. Locked up solid.

And yes indeed, it DID require extensive massage therapy with a BFH to get it apart, but I haven't had to resort to the smoke wrench. Yet. Early days...

That bearing should be easy to find, looks to be a pretty generic ball bearing.

Lots of time as you know just cleaning parts like those brakes can make a world of difference!

As for the BFH the trick is knowing where and how hard to hit things.

Bearing is on order from Amazon, ordered seals from O-Ring Store based on dimensions, hope they'll work.

I used a 5 pound short handled sledge to tap the housing off the bearing, but I used it like a dead-blow. Choked up on the handle and give it a good solid thunk but don't let it bounce.

There was no filter in the fuel filter housing which doesn't thrill me a lot. Pulled the steering wheel and dash to get a good look at the wiring. Planned to replace the ignition switch (no key) but it's proprietary and WAY different than the generic off/on/start switches I'm used to. Dreaded PO used a screwdriver so the switch itself DOES work, or did. I'll just fab up something that looks like a key.

Off to NAPA for filters and a baddry.
