Keep your Pacers and Gremlins. I could go for one of these. The car dammit the car.
OK I'm old not dead. Wonder if the girl plays chess.

A pal of mine in high school had a Javelin with a 290 V8 (289???) and was a pretty decent car. We went to Myrtle Beach NC on a winter break in about 1975 in it. He bought it on an impulse when we were 16 (in 1974) and I think that he wound up paying for it at least twice over, given the interest rate on the "My Cousin Vinny" loan he got.

Oooops - no politics - sorry, my bad. ;)

...and no, it didn't come with the girl (more's the pity) but at least his hair dye wasn't running down his chinny chin-chin during the trip.....

(oh shit, I did it again...ooops....)

That's not a Javelin. Javelins were OK. Look close at the pic. May have been based on a Javelin, much more performanced oreantied.
Shop I worked at in the late 70's one was shipped to us by rail. It had had a dash fire. We re-wired the dash and replaced burnt parts. Everyone had great fun test driving it.

Oh yeah - that is an AMX - a Javelin but shortened to be just a two seater.

Now THOSE were rare birds around here.

Initially there was the 4 seat Javelin and the 2 seat AMX. In the early 70's they dropped the 2 seater and offered the plain jane Javelin and the hotrod Javelin AMX.... both 4 seaters. So technically you're both correct. ;) My Dad had a plain jane Javelin. May not have been a hotrod, but I enjoyed hotrodding it. :geek:

Real AMXs are 2 seaters. Kind of like the difference between XS650 standards and those things they called Specials. :smoke:

That Honda "Unicam" design is pretty clever. The heavier intake valves get shim and bucket, the lighter exhaust valves get roller rockers. I once had a quick chat with a SoS racer using a 450 single with that setup. He mostly liked it, but said a traditional DOHC would be more tuneable for different tracks, allowing tweaking of valve overlap.

The problem is that those two bikes (the Kawi W800 and R-E Interceptor) are simply not widely available in Canada. There are dealers, but not many and none in my area.

I guess its a darned good thing I have my 45 year old version of those bikes.....

As with Raymond - I am completely unmoved by the other offerings on the market. They are either:
  • too impractical (the Italian bikes);
  • too expensive (the German bikes);
  • too unreliable (the German and Italian bikes)
  • or not available or with only a few dealers here (the Kawasaki W800 and R-E Interceptor 650);
  • or just way TOO GD$%#@### fugly (nearly all the rest).
Oh well - it would be better if I were elected to be The Emperor of Motorcycles.

Pete

What about the new, 850 cc V7 Special? My only minor complaint is that they should have used the higher spec V85TT engine (77 hp vs 65).

I have been interested in Motorcycles for many years ..And have never .never heard anyone complain about engine or handling of Moto Guzzi bikes.
Its a company that has done this for many years
Might be the most durable motor out there.
But the electrical is not in the same class.
But it is a brand I personally look at when I see one out there.

I'm coming to this conversation late and will only add these comments.
While I'm enthused at the resurgence in popularity of the parallel twin, most of the new offerings, Honda shown here, Yam 700, Kaw 650 Vulcan S are plainly just Gawd Awful Ugly aesthetically. Funky looking chassis, amorphous blob shaped fuel tanks, humpbacked profiles.
I much prefer the classic looks of the Triumph and Royal Enfield

The AMX had a design flaw. Factory installed drag links. I you were standing on the gas and hit a bump with the rear end the car would start a donut that the only way to stop it was to stop the car. Don't ask how I know that.

The Pinto wagon with a v6 and 4 speed was a nice little car until they had to put the battering rams on the ends to achieve the the road hugging weight standard.

Yes - I have always had a soft spot for the Guzzis too but again, expensive and not widely available here. I only know of one dealer (300+ km away) and they usually only carry 3-5 bikes at a time.

Why can't HonKawaYamUki just put one of those great engines into a nice looking motorcycle and NOT charge the earth for it?

GAWD - with all the attention being paid to R-E Interceptor (I subscribe to two YouTube channels that are almost exclusively devoted to riding, modifying and praising the R-E 650 twin), the Japanese manufacturers would jump on that bandwagon and kill off what has emerged as likely their biggest competitor in the western world. Once R-E gets a decently extensive dealer network established, they are gonna be unstoppable.
