Maybe a good alternative muffler, with a close to stock look.

In BMW airhead circles, "Hoske" mufflers has been a highly regarded modification since the 70s.
And they happen to look very similar to the stock mufflers on my 1977 D-model. They come in 2 sizes, for 38 and 40 mm OD headpipes. So no need for unsightly adapters etc. And being designed for 750-1000 cc twins, they should have no problems flow wise on a 650-880 cc XS.

Have a look here:

Yes, BMW actually translates to "... bring more money ...". Pretty much anything for them costs big bucks. Kind of why I got away from them.

Well, designed in Germany, and hopefully made om Germany, by Germans may result in a better product than some generic product made in PRC..

350 dollars (export price would be without sales tax) for a pair of chromed quality mufflers is hardly expensive. People pay twice that amount for a pair of US made RD350/400 expansion chambers. In mild steel.

Well that may be generally true, but what about the new Berlin airport. Some say already dated.

That could well be a massive fuckup. Like many other airport projects. CDG in Paris is particularly bad. Heathrow far from great. And so on. I still definitely prefer German cars by a mile. 3 BMW, 2VW, and 2 Opel so far. And an S10 Chevy that was terrible.

It's expensive. FFS I spent $1,000 for SS, custom made H1 expansion chambers which are works of art by themselves. And there are three of them stem to stern. No way I'd pay $350 for just mufflers.

Anyway, I just through someone may be interested in these, since they look similar to the stock mufflers on the later standards. And will fit common aftermarket headpipes, while possibly sounding better than stock without being outrageously loud. The baffle seems to be removable as well, which is a good thing for those of us that like to experiment with these things

Hard to deal with the difference in costs and prices from other countries with the US.

Can get a set of conti mufflers and XS650 headers, (exactly the same shape as standard headers), Hand made from Stainless steel and the headers are $750 and mufflers are another $800. To me that is reasonable, considered they will never have to be replaced.

This guy is also a craftsman who reproduces mufflers for old bikes and makes anything for bikes. But try to say this is a good deal for the US guys and your shot down in flames

That's a decent price for a pair. At first I thought it was each, and that would be pricey.

Despite the rather lukewarm response here, I emailed Siebenrock to get a little more info. Basically asked for length, largest diameter, and weight.
Also, I do have a hope they may actually look better than the stock mufflers with that same look. The stockers have all kinds of unsightly spot welds and weld seams that show through the chrome.

Nice looking Silencers. Price is pretty good too. Made in Germany, another plus. The only downside I can see from the pictures is the RH one seems to have an indent underneath for the brake pedal.
Very much like the originals on my TX750. I like them.

Did you have a look at the link i gave you.......Thoughts, opinion.

Yes I did. Thanks for the link. I am planning to contact him too, for a pair of SS headers close to the originals, except for being SS (obviously), single wall, and without the welded on tab where the original bolts to the bottom of the frame. And instead make a loose clamp to use in this position. This because I want to be able to replace flanges/ use alternative flanges. I guess this also could be solved by having a much thinner (shorter) flange on the pipes, and use "half moon" flanges under the main flange, like on my Ducatis.
However, shipping my original headpipes to Oz and back to Norway may add too much cost, so I thought maybe someone in the down under XS club may be willing to loan a set for pattern, if neccessary.

I wonder if what may look like an indentation, is actually just a reflection (mirror image) of the brake pedal.

Tell Pete that he made some headers for a 76 XS650 for Ash Kidd from Gordonvale, North Queensland, about 5 years ago. He may remember and still have the old headers or a template.

I have a set but live 1600 klm away. if you can't get someone closer i can help.

Most BMW R bike mufflers do have that "dent" on the bottom of the right muffler for brake pedal clearance.

I emailed him, but he has stopped making headpipes, due to difficulties sourcing tubing bends in suitable dimensions and radii.
