78E Standard Revival

What originally came on the bike isn't always the best. In the case of the '78 model, it
Yes, the 78E is going to be tuned almost exactly as the 79 SPII last project. Close to Stock as possible but perhaps "upgraded" in the same ways..
Cam Chain adjuster upgrade, altered Single breather, Auto Brake booster check valve, 81 Clutch actuator maybe for the more aggressive pull, Windy Nation rectifier, NGK LZFH Plug caps, Solid core plug leads, Uni Pod air filter. and so on.. I've rounded up most of all this, (blue headlight wire unplugged)
:)

Lifted it up another 4"×4" high for the Rear Shocks, Triumph T120, 2019 era final install.

Rear Standard Rack at the same time. It was a little of a wrestling match because of "loose" dimensioning? on the rear mount widths.

It's a real beauty :)
Getting ready for wheels. and beyond ...

Polishing wheels is descent way to spend a early dark evening. Even more fun when its time to put the wheels on !
20201205_182118.jpg

20201205_193726.jpg

Had to lever up the rear axle with a 2x4" to the axle slot height. Swingarm "spread" was a bit tight for the adjuster plates to slide in.
20201205_202952.jpg

Now I have to get the bike up onto its centerstand to be high enough for the front wheel installation.

Sheesh, call it a nice day

Things are moving right along Randy, looking good! :) Do you have a Jack or some kind of lift to get your bike up off of that block?

Don’t forget that when it’s on the centerstand , the bike is weighted towards the nose.

You need new stainless spokes and a Blackjack 1000, lol.

There is this screw transmission jack. It lifted the rear of my truck. Supposedly to purpose as an XS lift, its just not modified yet.
With the rear rack, wheel etc. The bike can be manhandled better now.
I'm just so pleased to get it on Wheels! Its been wheel less for 2 1/2 years.. front is next of course..

Where there's a Wheel, there's a way
Both wheels are on! ,
for the "test fit" of what is coming.
Front wheel spokes are nice cleaned up, rear wheel spokes mostly tarnished with old goo.
These Triumph T120 shocks are 10mm longer than the Speed Twin shocks I used on the 79 SPII. On this shallow carpet compressed under the bike centerstand, both Dunlops (rear a 120/90-18) are contacting carpet. It just may be real cool to add centerstand feet of a sort. We'll see.

As seen, A chome chain guard and chain are hot on my want list now so I can finish up the left side of the engine and get that nice cover off the shelf. Calipers to rebuild too.
But, Its On Its Wheels :D

...yeah, me too.....:notworthy:

Hi Pete,
any auto paint shop will make you a fizz-bomb to match your colour sample.
Like when I wanted to paint my gas tank XS11 left side view.JPG to match my sidecar they said:-
"that's Tangier Orange, we could mix you some but as it's Astro Tow Truck's fleet colour we keep it in stock."

fredingtoon, and everybody.. put more bling in the hardware selection :)
The closer a guy looks at XS's the more details show..

I like the Triumph shocks. They say a little longer shock just sharpens up the handling a bit, probably will ride nice too.
The Triumph T120 shocks took my eye adapter tricks, the bottom eye is a stock Yamaha turned down the rubber to fit snug into the shock eye. Top bushing sleeves made by me.
The 78E model does have a frame grab loop. That loop did interfere with the top shock eye just a tad. I did use a .375" ball end mill to carve a relief into the shock eye for clearance. And it fit perfectly. High hopes for this ride !

Adding bits and finding hardware and such to both the 78E and the 79 SPII, waiting, searching, arranging. Planning.
The 79 SPII custom, shorter shaped seat is still very time consuming lol..

this Dunlop D404 120/90-18 I found during the fall appears to fit quite well on the 78E, The Dunlop 404 is physically bigger than the Dunlop K81 4.10-18 which was on this bike a few years back.

Levers, grips, mirrors, all handlebars accessories are falling into place to see this bikes styling. Front end needs include headlight button up. Brake lines..soon.

D.I.D. standard chain is supposed to be one of the best standard chains, very well made with tight tolerances. That's what I installed after finally wearing out my J.C.Whitney special, lol.

Thanks, will buy it ! I need the chain on to torque the sprocket nut, rotor even. To get the engine left side buttoned up soon.

Edit.. bought the DID 110 links. (Ebay)

I’m running that same chain on my ‘72 . I’ve been very happy with it. It’s about half the weight and bulk of the o ring chain I bought for my ‘77. I also used to run that DID chain on my ‘77 , it was good for years.
