Hey guys I have done a little more digging and found this diagram. Wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on if it can be used for the 79 XS650SF year.

This is a new engine to me and I have it as a donor engine to my old one. If it is stock can I use the new Pamco Electrical Ignition on MikesXS listed below:

XS-Charge XS650 Gen-II Electronic Ignition, Coil, Plug Caps - 1970-1979

Any help will be much appreciated!!!

Far as I know, the Pamco system will work on any year XS

Thanks for responding! With the Pamco system I do not need anything else? Just want to make sure before buy more parts than the kit is all I need.
I've never used the Pamco, so I can't really give you an answer. I would assume the kit comes with everything you need. Maybe someone else will chime in here?

is mikes still selling a a Pamco labeled ignition system?
You still need the advance weights, rod unless you go to the full system with advance. https://www.mikesxs.net/xs-charge-xs650-gen-ii-e-advancer-electronic-ignition-1980-1984.html that needs just the rod. I have no experience with their XS charge branded ignitions. The product information page has no installation instructions and seems quite unclear as to how the existing advance is used/disabled. Not confidence inspiring.

Just looked and MikesXS doesn't sell the Pamco knock off XScharge ignitions anymore.... https://www.mikesxs.net/xs-charge-xs650-gen-ii-electronic-ignition-coil-plug-wire-1970-1979.html .....far as i know, no one who posts on here have installed one of these.

As long as you still have the stock mechanical advance unit with your '79 motor, you can use that ignition. Personally, I'd go for just the ignition unit and save yourself about $100 .....

so instead of the kit I can go with the unit listed above and it will work with the electrical diagram above??

Then I'd use a Honda MP08 coil with it, less than $20 off eBay.

Yes, it should work. This new XS Charge ignition is very new so I don't think there's much info out there yet on how it hooks up. But, I'm going to assume it hooks up pretty much the same way the Pamco did.

Finally got it in the mail. Do you know I need anything else upgraded before installing it on a stock engine?? It seems gnarly how straight forward it seems and I feel like I am missing something.

You need a single dual output coil (two plug wires) instead of the original 2 separate single coils. Here's that Honda MP08 coil I mentioned next to an '80 and later stock coil. I suppose you could use either but I'm partial to the Honda one because you can change the plug wires .....

You'll also need the advance unit and advance rod that runs through the head. If your '79 motor was stock and complete, it should have those parts. Here's the advance unit. If you've got it, you'll find it under the chrome cover on the right side of the engine .....
