This thread will be documenting the build of a 1972 XS650.

I purchased the bike from the second owner who had it laying up against the back of his garage under a tarp. He bought it from the original owner who had it laying on its side, in the weeds, for over a decade. Needless to say the bike is a real mess.... and a real challenge!

Over the next couple of weeks I hope to illustrate my method of bringing this bike back from the dead. First... here is my shop:

Sorry but I do not have pictures of when I collected the bike... I had already started to clean it up prior to the decision to create this build thread.

The bike was missing the seat, both side covers and the right side muffler. The left side had to be trashed anyway. I did get the chrome seat hoop and the bottom chrome piece that holds on the seat cover.

I stripped the gas tank of its paint and addressed the several rust areas. The inside of the tank had a lot of rust and gas varnish which was mitigated using a gel type toilet bowl cleaner... worked great!

After cleaning the inside of the tank I sealed it with Caswell Tank Sealer. I have used this product before and it is the best that I have found. It comes in several colors that comes in handy if you are covering up some of the remaining rust in the tank.

I am currently waiting for parts... new solenoid, rubber foot pegs, battery basket, oil filter, etc.

Does anyone know the color name / number of the red XS2?

Brilliant Red and Pearl White. Since the Candy Red is applied layer by layer until the proper depth of color is achieved it is notoriously difficult to match exactly. The Pearl white goes down first , then the red is applied over it.
Are you planning on painting it yourself?

Is the pearl white graphic a decal or paint? Do they make decals for this tank?

I have had some relative success painting tanks... however, it has always been with decals with a heavy clear coat.

By the way I got my tank badges in the mail today... 'Thanks' for the tip on where to find them.

The Pearl white from the factory was paint, there is however a decal available ( maybe from Diablo ? ) that could be applied over a solid red tank. If you’re thinking about spraying it yourself, there are some very nice candy red metallics that are not true candys, they are easier to apply, just mix and shoot. House of Kolor comes to mind.
I believe you can also source these paints in pre mixed spray cans. Some of our members have laid down some really nice paint jobs with custom blended rattle cans.

Cra-z1...

Beautiful bike... After looking at some of the bike on this site I am not so sure I should be doing a 'Build Thread'. Mine is not going to look anyway near the perfection of these classics!

Its your bike, do whatever renovation suits you. The way I see it, you saved that bike from a rusty death. And as for your build thread, hey we’re gear heads around here, we just enjoy the mechanical aspect of the whole thing, following along and seeing you overcome your challenges, that’s our kind of fun! :)

You have 90% of the parts there. It can be done. However the cost is often higher than the value would be once done. Most of us enjoy saving these old bike and the satisfaction in getting them running again. I actually have a titled XS2 frame sitting here and I know of a XS2 engine near me and have contemplated on the idea of putting one together. But then I look at the projects I got going on now and I come to my senses

Man, your projects are serious. Way more complex than my comfort level! :laugh2:

Well... here is what I am good at... Showing my ignorance. I have been waiting for a new Solenoid and battery box in order to try and start the bike. However, it is just taking too long so I attempted to wire around the solenoid...and guess what... I will be damned if I can find a starter button. It has the de-compression lever and it has some kind of a switch on it... so... How do I engage the starter? No button on the right controls.
