Jim's Speed Twin Build

Right side cover I settled on is kinda rough... lot's of corrosion and scratches, but the inside is unmolested by PO's... almost like it'd never been into.

Drilled both covers....

...and I like it. :D

Screws are just temporary 'till the epoxy cures. I have two more screws that I cut the heads down and stripped the zinc dip off of. They'll get a nickel plating.

Looks interesting.
Any plans for this.View attachment 180988
Don't think a Brit twin ever said where the kicker was.
Nope. It was never meant to be an exact replica. Think of it more as my interpretation of a "retro" Triumph Speed Twin. :sneaky:

Aw come on. TIG it full, smooth and polish. You'll feel better or at least I would.
Don't get me wrong, I thought about it. Problem is what alloy is it? If I don't use the right filler rod, there's a good chance it'll stick out like a sore thumb. Finally decided to listen to the Beetles and just let it be. ;)

If you have another cover you could test and find out. In my limited experience and humble opinion if it sticks well it will look fine. But then I've been wrong before.
Inquiring minds would like to know. Or maybe better someone who has done it will chime in.

Jim,
What if you took a busted cover and "shaved" a slice off it (band saw, grinder, etc.) and used that for your filler rod? It would be the same alloy, right? :umm:
You guys are really tempting me ain't ya?

I bought mine back when the Alpha TIG first came out... 4-5 yrs ago? Was hesitant buying a Chinese one, but I'd guess it's stood the test of time. It works great. The only niggle I have with it is the oddball foot pedal on the early ones. Suppose I could suck it up and buy the newer (more standard one), but they're kinda spendy. You get a new one?

Yes the new model has the better foot pedal. Its supposed to be one of the better units from China, and for what I do with it, it should be fine. I do like my Lincoln 180 mig.

Im a Pipefitter by trade and the union trained us in stick welding large pipe, however I was in the HVAC end of it so didn't get to advance to TIG. Now that I'm retired, trying to catch up. Done a bit of Oxy/Acetylene welding so used to feeding the rod
It was perfect timing as the local Trade school offered a Basic TIG class in January.
