Big Fin Block Gives a New Look
Motor all buttoned up, tomorrow I will look at the po's box of dismantled BS34 carbs to see if they will make a set. The baggies are marked left and right so that gives me hope.
 
Decided to smoke some ribs while waiting for a special delivery

Looking with a strong light and magnification to try to read jet sizes.
Looking for a pair of 132.5's for BS34's I am assembling. I sure there is a pair here, PO had 130's in them.
 
Polishing badly oxidized rims off my 77D. clearcoat wasn't hard, cuz it was mostly gone. oxidization is next level and responds poorly to all elbow grease.
Here is a function that describes my experience:

Time + Hand-cramping = Amount of shine
Gazillion

so far have tried Autosol, vinegar, steel wool, sandpaper, wizard cloth, with no noticeable winner in terms of effect. I have lost a fair amount of dead skin off my hands, so there's that.

Relacing for the first time, so if it's gonna shine it's happening here and now. Or in a week or so... #wintergoals

Paint stripped 1st maybe?
I don't think I ever got my aluminum engine covers to polish as good as after I first stripped them.

Yeah, I forgot to mention I used gel stripper. It did make the last remnants of clearcoat very brittle, which was helpful, but zero effect on the metal itself.

I'm gonna grab some of the abrasive wheels the guys here recommend, but I don't like waiting. As I understand lustre and longevity are both just an issue of how fine and how long you want to sand/buff. Personally going for a clean, but less glossy look, to minimize upkeep. Luckily I don't have much actual pitting like I do on my chrome.
 
Lakeview, if your BS34 carbs are the Canadian version, a #130 may have been the stock main jet size, also the stock air jet size. Your pic shows small round mains. Those were used for the air jet. The actual main should be a large round type. On the BS34 carbs, the main jet acts as a fastener to "bolt" the needle jet in place. The larger head on the large round main is better suited for this.
 
Thanks, the existing main jet in this carb is 132.5 and the air jets were 130. I have ordered new pair of each (132.5) and also the one that is 42.5. A little bit rich will not hurt.
Thanks for the explanation of why the bigger jet inside the carb, makes sense. I am much more accustomed to the BS 38's; these 34's may well be the last or second last set I will mess with.
 
Today I had a play with the side casing as I have chosen to go with a hydraulic clutch.
I purchased a Nissin/Suzuki slave cylinder as it was cheap and to be fair it doesn't look too bad in it's place.It was almost a good fit in the original hole but I needed to drill the hole bigger to fit it correctly.
To make sure I had the cylinder centred exactly I machined a disc the same o/d as the casing hole with a pilot hole in the centre for the hole saw to centre correctly and to stop in wandering.It worked well I think and all I need to do now it remove a cats whisker of material from the cylinder face to let it sit flat,drill the holes and job done.When I drill the holes I may have to weld some material in the back of the casing for some extra strength but so far so good.

That looks good. I did the same thing , just finished, for my winter project. I don't have access to machine equipment, so did it all with hand tools. Pushrod length and master cylinder size are next up for you to think about. Looking forward to seeing how you make out .

On both my BS34's Oceania 80SG and Canadian 83SK models the mains was/is a 130........We have the same adjustable needles from Factory
 
I was supposed to be rebuilding my new (old) carburetors today. But Canada Post decided that, even though I had the "Deliver to post office" option selected, they would ship the carbs back to Nova Scotia instead. Thanks Canada Post...
 
I found a front suspension which was worth rebuilding and made the best parts from that and my originals work out. After much kerosene cleaning and elbow grease all back together with the new springs from Mikes and ready to go. Also confirmed that the PO did install the tapered roller bearings in the steering head!

Not a thing, recently. I did organize all my build ideas, parts found, etc, bookmarks onto a Trello Board. Very handy.

Right now I am on ignore with Clutch Masters concerning getting the correct clutch for my '95 BMW 540i.

Well,I haven't got as far as putting a master and slave together but after chatting to a couple of racers over the weekend it seems my initial plan of using a KTM type master cylinder of 9.5mm bore size will not work with the 38mm Suzuki slave.Mathematics came into play and for me to use a smaller master I need to downsize the slave....I want to stick with a smaller master as I want a neat assembly on the bars for that minimalistic look.(I have no knowledge of radial cylinders and they can get pricey.)I have seen some brake/clutch parts on a trials bike site and by chance they have a smaller and very neat looking slave which could work nicely.I need to do some more homework before spending the cash mind you.
