What paint luster was used on stock XS650 frames

Judging by the reflection on the frame tubes (red circles).... gloss.

Since I'm just a dabbler I've found spray or BRUSH high build gloss black from a rattle can, wait a couple days, rub with a rag dipped in blue magic. Blends perfect and the "weld joint rust" where the factory job left bare metal stays rust free.

The first pic is XS650SK frame. The second is contrasted by a gloss handlebar. The contrast is not very clear on the screen, but it is when I go in the garage and look.

A lot of work to prep a frame. Very least use a 2k rattle can. These paints hold up to heat, gas, solvents, brake fluids, oils etc. also don’t chip easy.

satin is pretty much spot on stock frames. Never seen a gloss frame on a 70s bike.

I’m not sure of the time lines but I know quite a few bikes and even some cars being produced in the 50/60s were dipped. Single stage (probably lead) paint.

I believe you are right as to frame finish although my memory would never go back 50 years. How do we set up a vote system? Start a new thread?

Both my BSA Bantam and Triumph Bonneville were gloss and I would argue that so is my XS.T they certainly weren't satin or matt. I assume that they would have used a single coat paint which is less glossy than what we are used to now.
This may be due to many solid gloss paints also having a clear coat which enhances the finish and also adds an extra layer of protection?

I kinda meant what you said there...

When we say gloss today we mean GLOSS.

One of the easiest ways to spot a bike that’s been repainted vs a survivor is the gloss factor.

2 stage systems that are in use today just shine too much to look right.

I think satin gets lumped in with matte and flat - a satin finish should still have a decent sheen when it hits the light but not look wet. It’s not a dull finish.

ps. Internets probably gotta be the best place to discuss visuals and subtleties of light reflection haha

Just looked on Partzilla. The fiche shows it a Yamaha Black.... if that helps anybody?
