I'm reassembling my 81 special and I noticed I only have 2 rocker box stud sleeves. Am I missing 2 or is this normal? They definitely weren't there when I took this apart and I didnt have any major leaks. Also of the 2 I have, one came out easy. The second is in there good. Any tips on getting it out?

There should be 4 of these. Find a socket that just slides through one of the empty holes. Use it to tap it out from the top.

Why did you paint the inside of the rocker box?

Tell the owner of that auction you're a member here and ask him to throw in the red hi-temp o-rings if he's got them. I'm trying to remember If my own '81 had all 4 or just two diagonally, can't find any pics of a head with just two though, and no harm...so.

Will do. Do you think theres a chance that it's only supposed to have 2 then?

I just can't remember but something makes me think I might have had only two. Could you tell if it had been opened before? BTW, it won't leak from where the two halves join without sealer although some ppl use it.

Good grief.... it takes 4. Look at the machining in the outer holes. Or... read the buildup thread. Or.... look in the parts catalogue. Plenty of ways to tell... jus' not from someone who "thinks it might be......whatever..."

Ya know... don't know whether I'd feel stupid or pissed if I took that advice and it leaked... and I had to take the motor back out. Might it not leak if you didn't use the sealer? Maybe, maybe not. You wanna take the chance on pullin' the motor back out or just go ahead and use the sealant?

You wouldn't feel stupid. I don't think that's possible.

Yes, there are places for 4. No guarantee they are all populated at the factory, on every engine.

FWIW, plenty of people have not used sealer at that joint and reported no leaking. It's not just my crazy idea...lol

I've only been on here for a few years. I don't remember anyone putting a rocker box on with no sealer. Could you please point me to a thread where that was how it was done.

The factory did. That's all I need to know.
You'll need to provide proof of that statement or I call :bs:

Nope, just believe it or not. It doesn't matter to me. However you will get leakage from the valve covers, no matter what you do...
