Anyone know how you go about shipping paint?
What's the normal cost for the traditional liner kits (Redcoat... POR15...etc.)?

I just had a Caswell tank liner kit delivered. The cans are secured with the clips linked to above, and then placed in a plastic bag with a twist-tie.
Cost was $65 delivered for enough to do two tanks (although they no longer recommend using it for two tanks. This is B.S. There is plenty for two stock XS650 tanks). I chose a colored kit. The clear kit is $10 less.

You're right. I think you can coat a 650 Special tank 1/2 inch thick all the way around if you use the entire quantity provided. I agree that it does two tanks.
(1/2" is an exaggeration)

Good new Jim. The number of nights I have been kept awake regarding MaxPete's epoxy primer lined fuel tank has taken its toll. Perhaps MaxPete can comment if he has used the tank yet, unless I have dreamed all of this.

Tomorrow I will coat a strip of steel with an epoxy primer that is available in the UK on Ebay. I will get it cured and then leave it to soak in UK Sainsbury Unleaded. Will up date you in many months time.

Yes... please do.
Pete's tank does have this primer in it. I still have it. Shipping to Canada is stupid expensive, so a cross boarder "smuggle" is on hold 'till the border reopens. Hopefully by early spring...

Coated a test strip with an epoxy primer easily obtained in the UK: Novol Protect 360 + H 5950 Hardener 1:1 made in Poland. This epoxy primer is intended for auto-body repairs with direct application to steel:
Epoxy.JPG
Steel sheet was sanded clean and washed with xylene.
Cured at approx 30 Celsius for 24 hours.
Sainsburys Regular Unleaded Petrol.
Stored in the house at approximately 20 Celsius.

I will test this from time to time to see if it softens or delaminates and place the data below:

01/01/2021 Placed in sealed petrol environment.

02/01/2021 The coating below the petrol surface is softening.

03/01/2021 The coating below the petrol surface has lost adhesion to the metal.

Is this epoxy good for lining fuel tanks...:hellno:

Anyone know a nurse or doctor in the Detroit area, I hear they are allowed to cross easy and Windsor is just south of there, yes you can go south to get to the US from Canada!

...every time I see this thread come up, I get all excited - and then I remember that the FUCKING border is closed.

It’s only about an 11 hour drive to Jim’s place from here and when the time is right, DAMMIT, I’M COMIN’ OVER!

Let us know how the tank liner job goes

Difference 'tween "proof" and "resistant".....
Fire proof means it won't burn.
Fire resistant means it'll still burn... it just doesn't want to. :lmao:

So your thinking no to the Caswell ?
When a surgeon says that " should" take care of that problem
It's time for a second opinion :hump:

Never used it so I can't give an opinion. Here's what I can opine on though....
On their website they state.... and this higher strength reduces the need for a clinically clean surface, as the epoxy actually prefers to bond to a rough rusty surface.
That statement is absolutely ridiculous on it's face. Nothing bonds well or for any length of time to rust..... nothing. You could put 6 inches of epoxy over rust and the rust will continue to spread if it's not removed first.

I agree. They make it sound as though rust is a static process - but it isn't. Once a metal starts to oxidize (in steel we call that - rust, but nearly all metals oxidize), the process continues as long as there is oxygen present. So, you could coat the inside of the tank - and if there was even the smallest flaw in the coating, the rusting process would continue and eventually it would start to flake the coating off.

My vote is to either clean it and keep it full of fuel (thus excluding moisture and oxygen) or - if a liner is really necessary, use POR-15 - which is the stuff that Jay Leno uses on his zillion-dollar cars and bike restorations. I don't think I have heard anything bad about POR-15 <could be wrong> - but I have heard tales of woe about every other product.

I don’t know where else in the country this stuff is used, but at least here in Arizona and California, they sell a gas that’s known as CBG ( Cleaner Burning Gas ) , it’s not just added alcohol, it’s a whole witches brew of highly volatile chemicals. It’s what melted my tank liner on my XS2. I’m honestly not sure if there is a liner that could withstand it.
