Phosphoric acid for rust on chrome parts

I polished with Mothers chrome polish followed with Quick Wax. It won’t pass close scrutiny but at 10 feet it’s good, depending upon seat, taillight, etc. I may be able to use it as is.

Bottom line is, the phosphoric acid solution did not do any damage to the chrome. I’ll continue to use it for less delicate things. I acquired another gas tank that’s very rusty inside. It will also be treated to phosphoric acid.

Well for me that would be just fine, short ride down a dusty road and you'd never notice a thing!

Now if someone could just come up with a solution to soak my exhaust system in that will fill the holes in the bottom.....and stop that rattle on the right side muffler!

Hi Ken,
muffler holes can be blocked with split-open beer cans held on with hose clamps,
Use the cans inside out to look like chrome or right side out to advertise their original contents.
Try long sheet metal screws to hold the right side muffler's innards in place.
Or slacken off the valve clearance adjusters so they rattle loudly enough to drown out the muffler rattle.

Well as the holes are on the bottom I played welder with my little 100amp Lincoln wire feed. and managed to plug up some of them. But might take you up on the suggestion about the long screws to quiet down the rattle at idle. Seems when the exhaust flow get stronger at higher RPMs it's not bad.

If the gallbladder removal surgery does some good in the way I feel I may have to think about finding a better exhaust system. I'm not one to be worried about some age marks, heck I have enough of them to make the old XS650 look good in comparison. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a pair that have some road rash then I can invent a good story to go with they!

Hi Ken
my first wife gave up her gall bladder to UK medical science in the 1960s. A week in hospital.
My current wife gave up hers in the 1990s here in the 1990s. Only 3 days in hospital.
I'd have supposed that in these modern times they'd have ultrasonically shattered your gallstones to gravel
and sent you home to piss and scream out the debris in the privacy of your own washroom?.

Nope they did the removal via four small incisions. one right in the navel! Picture isn't me but the stab wounds are about right. I think that guy could replace the cam chain on an XS650 with motor in frame! Longest incision is about 15 mm!

I bought this stock exhaust on eBay about a’hunnert years ago.

I painted the rusty bits with phosphoric acid.

I bought another gallon. Phosphoric is presented only in Spanish. It’s the same stuff.

After a good rinse, most of the rust wiped off with a rag. I’ll finish with chrome polish or Quick-Glo.

In shipping and oil&gas we use "Metalbrite" from Unitor/ Wilhelmsen.com, a world wide supplier to the shipping industry. Metalbrite is also phosphoric acid, and it comes in 5 gallon jugs.
