Just out of curiosity - Airplane Guys

I've wondered why Republic Aircraft named their F-12 "Rainbow". Seems a bit "light in the loafers" if you know what I mean.....

Hi azman,
most likely Republic were stuck on alliterative aircraft names?
The name of almost every aircraft we built at Bristol began with B
Bombay, Bulldog, Beaufort, Beaufighter, Brabazon, Britannia and so on.

P-35 Guardian, P-47 Thunderbolt. I forgot what the F-84 and F-105 was called. Thunder something both of them. Maybe the guy who named the planes had the day off when the F-12 needed a name. What do I know...

Forty pages of warbirds designed to commit heinous acts, because even more abominable would be the loss of freedom of thought in the world. That's what I was taught anyway.

Tomorrow on the VFT.

He's wandering over the line into politics. I think it's aptly put, by the way.
I'll admit to being torn about admiring weapons of war.
Aren't you?

Always. We are all walking contradictions, are we not? You should see the gun collection I obtained before my mind changed about owning them. Still own them, just not in a place where I would feel good about using them in anger. Like I said, walking contradiction. If I were true to my beliefs on the matter, I’d throw them off the Golden Gate bridge out here in rainbow land.

Without delving too far into philosophy - or politics for that matter - I can certainly appreciate a well-designed mechanical thing from the slide rule era for what it is, irrespective of its origins or intent.

If you get the fundamental purpose of the weapons of war, then you won't be torn about admiring them. They become admirable. At some level Buzzword realizes that about his guns. It causes an internal conflict that he resolves by thinking everyone is conflicted. But people who know what they are doing are not. The secret is to use your brain and eliminate the inconsistency. It may cause you to change your thinking, but that's better than stumbling around being "a walking contradiction".

P.S. Getting their purpose is also what makes it obvious when they're being misused. Very valuable, not that we can do much about it.

The Convair 880 took its first flight on the same day I took my first breath.

That is very cool Marty - Happy Birthday my friend!

....and from the looks of that take-off, it is a good thing that you weren't born just behind the 880, or that first breath might very well have been your last. ;)
