Backroader's 1978 XS Special - "For your eyes only"

Backroader, THAT is a very nice bike! I can't believe the insurance cost ... $1,400 would insure my bike (at the current rate) for the next 19 years! I will post pics of my 78se when I am able get it out of storage. Our bikes are identical. I wonder how many vin numbers they differ by.

My '05 R1 is $1380.00 a year fully insured and thats with the maximum discount (43%). The XS should be roughly half that. I wish it was 100 bux a year... Id get 5 years at a time just for fun! :banghead:

I put about 40 miles on it today... a little cold and find there are lots of bugs to iron out yet...

The speed cable is not working very well...sluggish, same as the tach cable.

The clutch is dragging a little as well..

I guess the cold weather here in Winterpeg (34F) is not warm enough yet....

yeh thats unreal expensive. In Saskatchewan My 2004 Ducati 999 SBK costs about 1300 for the year. I plated my honda cb as an antique at 8 bones a month.

If you are spending $1400 for full coverage you might want to consider going to liability only, if that's an option. Around here $1400 would go a long ways toward paying for the bike! Nice bike, BTW.

Hi backroader your bike should be old enough to plate as an antique in sask. that brings the plates and insurance down to about 114 dollars but then you add on extra insurance to cover the cost of the bike. still cheap by comparison.

£85 here to cover all 3 Xs's together ..Just cost me £3 extra to add the Intruder onto the policy:thumbsup:
Makes a big difference here if you live in the countryside, have a garage to store the bikes & have a good 'No Claims' history..Luckily I
tick all the boxes:wink2:

backroader,

$1400 per year when you really only get to ride 4 months. That's thievery, but typical of a socialist regime that wants to eliminate motorcycles because they are bad for your health.

I pay $494 a year for 3 motorcycles, or about $170 for each bike. I live in South Carolina, so I ride all year long. 12 months.

Insurance companies here recognize that most people do not ride all the time and if you have an accident, you will probably be killed and not cause very much property damage to third parties. The bike itself probably has a market value of $50 if damaged, so no biggy there either.

So, it's obvious that the folks in Manitoba have a different agenda that has nothing to do with the risk factors and their potential liability.

<political rant deleted>

my insurance actually went down when i put my XS on my policy!!! hahahahaha we had 3 bikes on the policy already and they said when you put 4 bikes on there you get a discount and it actually saved me money!!! how often does that happen! gotta love progressive!!!! :D

Well it's time to say Good Bye to this one..... an offer (over $4000) has come along that I cannot say no to. I am probably giving up one of the finest specimens of an un-molested XS Special left today.

Time to move on to another project.

This XS was entered into two show-n-shines last year and placed 1st and 2nd.

Backroader,

That is probably the nicest unmolested 78 Special not still in a crate.

I am sure your sad to see it go,just hope new owner appriciates what he or she is getting.

$4000+ is a pretty good buck for one of these though, that kind of offer is not gonna come along every day. That's one thing that makes me upset about these bikes.

If your bike was a Triumph or a Norton the sky is the limit for a bike in your bikes condition, but not a Japanese bike.

When I saw your bike on the avatiar,I thought it was mine, mine is pretty clean, but certainly not as clean as your museum piece.

I'm a little sad that you're selling that badboy:( . Its certainly a pristine example of one of the best years for these bikes. My 78SE has 23,986 kms on it and runs like a new bike. My addiction runs deep.................selling mine would be unthinkable!

I saw a 78 Special on Ebay today, in sad shape I might add. I wish I had the time, space and money to open a rescue shelter for all the XS650's out there that deserve a better home.

ps: I managed to get around the insurance issue last summer. My XS is now classified as Vintage, and I was able to get a plate for $120.00 per year. It is very resticted though, only allows me to drive to and from shops for repairs and to show and shines.... this was a perfect fit for me.

Goddamn it I just HAD to read another thread on insurance. I talked to a guy back home in Newfoundland last summer who was insuring a Zx14 for $200/yr. I am getting quotes for $1000/yr for my Bandit12, and $800/yr on the XS, and $1000/yr on my GS1100. I am so pissed off at the raping we get here in Ontario, with absolutely NO justification. I sent of an email to the Ontario Insurance Commission asking why companies are allowed to charge 10 time the rate people in other states and provinces pay. I am not holding my breath for a response. Many companies won't even quote on bikes older than 25 years old. There is one or two companies who will insure bikes over 30 years old as vintage bikes, but you get a whopping 2000km a year to use them, and can't drive them to work or school. What I am supposed to do with a bike to old to insure as a regular bike, and not old enough to insure as a vintage bike? Let it age like wine I guess before getting reamed afresh by the one or two companies who will insure it in a couple of years after an appraisal. I rode a massive 3000km last year and shelled out $1000 for the privilege. Companies also tell you if you have a lapse in coverage, you get put back into the new rider pool, meaning even more massive ripoff rates. This is a blatant lie, but defacto law, as they will simply refuse to abide by the rules and slough you off to another company if you don't play ball. Some guys are getting quoted $10,000 a year to insure a supersport. One guy was quoted $3100 to insure a ZX6R even with 20 years riding experience because he took a couple of years off to pay for a new house. It stinks to high heaven, but the sale of insurance in Ontario is limited to a few large providers (mostly the big chartered banks) who underwrite a lot of smaller companies. Nothing like a monopoly for customer service. I wish they would bust this market wide open and let anyone who wanted to sell insurance here. Remember shit like this whenever you hear about how well the Canadian banking system has weathered the financial crisis. They have a closed shop and can do whatever they want in this market. Customer service is non-existent, bank fees go up whenever the wind changes, and venture capital is largely left to the government to provide. Oh, they'll be happy to get their snout in once you are successful, but they'd rather sit back, fix the system so they can maximize profit and minimize risk, pick the low hanging fruit, and ream it to you every which way possible.

man, manitoba sucks for insurance. You can register as antique in Saskatchewan and you have all the advantage of regular plates except you get less if it's written off. 10 a month for antiques on my xs...even normal plates are like 20 a month.
