What have you done to your XS today?

VHT primer.JPG P1010041.JPG Now that I can work...pulled the tape off the lower engine front. Going to swivel the engine stand rear bolt and paint the cruddy rear and cover next to the starter...I see paint there.
> primer coat> 2, maybe 3 light color coats > clear coat later.

Perfect temp/ humidity today to paint outside.

Not so cold out today so I broke out the tools and parts to do the following:
- removed engine mounts in preparation for head retorque
- carb mounts for BS38’s
- new diaphragms for BS38’s
- final assembly of rebuilt BS38’s with new jets
- silicone orings on tappet covers
- removed PWK32’s and dual throttle cable
- completed LED turn signal install

To do:
- head retorque
- lube new throttle and clutch cables, then install
- 8 plate clutch install complete with new springs
- timing marks

Thanks, appreciate the comments. I worked on the bike much of last year and hope I can get more riding time in this year. The list of things to do to the bike is getting pretty short and hopefully all will be done by the springtime other than dialing in the BS38’s.

Mate I love what you have done there, very close to what I have in my head for mine. Any chance of a few more pics from other angles? Also are those the original guards cleaned up and painted? Great work!

Hello I can send photos to you or post here. Let me know what angles you are looking for.

Thanks Mate, maybe both sides and top down? Having a bit of a battle with myself on what to do with bars, triple clamp, instruments and switches.. post here would be fine, I am sure many more would be interested too!

Thanks Bosco, great work and love the colour! I am thinking of doing similar with mine and this really helps clarify a few things. Looking at a Texavino seat as the price is good and looks like pretty good quality with easy fitment, could you tell me where yours is from? The ignition switch cover is brilliant. Thanks again!

Seat was on the bike when I bought it. I’ll look in my documentation to see if I can find where the po got it.

Reminds me of the Giuliari 2/4 seat that was on my Z1B. Think they are still available but don't know if they do an XS fitment.

P1010044.JPG P1010045.JPG nice bosco...
humm, Even though My steel rims were dead true on the bike and spun like fresh bearings...I don't seem to be liking some rust spots that go through the chrome. Hit some spots with blue Magic and 0000 steel wool n clean rag. Put some Rustoleum gel directly on one of the spots and not much happened. May just have to see how wide a rim/tire I can go with safe margin in aluminum (a little devil is whispering me ear).

baking my silver engine case, color coat in the sun to cure that along...switching to a Duplicolor Hi-temp. clear coat over that. The VHT has more ceramic and stated as more of a satin / clear. Cleaned, polished, taped up ends of starter motor and prepped the black for some fresh new black....it's curing now too. Maybe I move on to those whistle clean carbs. See if they want to go back together. Recall need to make a gasket on the choke side. Give me time to think of alternate wheels that will work with my factory '72 spokes if can be.

If you're going through all that trouble with the wheels, I'd just get stainless spokes and be done with it. They're pretty reasonably priced from XS650Direct.

I'm on Mike's XS looking at what rims they have in stock..but, I don't know what leeway I have on size and rim "type" WM or H front and rear. Stock steel on '72 is F: 185 X 19" W R: 2.15 X 18" W.
just saw a post in the tech section/ wheels page 1, someone? stated the '72 front wheels are not interchangeable with other yr. model's ft. wheels.

That's just the front hub, rim is the same. The hub has that funky one year only disc mount.

For rims, I'd stick with an original sized rear but you could up-size the front a bit (match the rear size). The "H" style rim is that flanged style that came on the later Standard models. The WM style is the flat type like your original steel ones. Again, XS650Direct has most of the same rims as Mike's, but at a better price AND they will ship free. Mike's doesn't count rims towards their free shipping limit (or exhaust stuff). Pretty crafty of them, eliminating the big ticket items from free shipping eligibility, lol.

Ah,so, front hub. Thanks..and for your rim(s) opine. Yes, I see about a 20% diff. in rear rim price. Otherwise, I need to make a trip to Mike's at some time anyway...that is if i don't want to use a right side original muffler with a 3" screwed on metal patch. I'm < 50 mi. away. I picked up my fork parts there when I fetched my gas tank in December...but, difficult address to navigate to. Sitting here I may just get some new Evapo-rust, let it do it's thing around the rims and polish. Second thought today, I'd hate to just set aside those steel rims especially if i can't go wider in the rear.

Thanks Mate, just bought this one with the stitching and pipe in Yammy candy red. Colour is going to be white and candy red flashes and pin striping on guards and wheels. Hopefully it fits reasonably easily and the quality is good... I will post some pics of before and the build in the next few days. Appreciate your help!
