Clutch basket nut and clutch springs

I've seen then on the yamabits website but there must be some somewhere local (In the US)
Time to check out Partzilla

If I remember correctly there are 3 or 4 different clutch variations.
With some slight differences in plates also ..best checked on a parts list
I Used Mikes clutch holding tool which folded and I broke the outer Clutch basket
The used replacement clutch bought on line had those above mentioned differences
Some parts was the same -- as the clutch basket.
I found one warped pressure plate checking them on a glass surface.
Some English gentleman on line used 3 small C - clamps fixating the clutch for tightening
I think i did that last time. Pretty sure.

Now for my (final ?)
I have new Barnett clutch springs that are used when putting the outside clutch cover on
The new ones I have are quite a bit longer than stock
I've been searching to see what should exactly fit as I think what I have are to long
I gotta keep looking If I try and use what I have I'm afraid of stripping out the screw holes trying to get them started

I see where what I have will fit a 76 xs500 /74 tx 500/ 78 xs 750
Should fit my 75 ?

Sounds like you got the spring set for the '80 and later 6 plate clutch. Exactly how long are they? The stock ones for your clutch are about 34mm long. Aftermarket H.D. replacements are often longer, sometimes as long as around 42mm. The later stock springs used in the later 6 plate clutch are almost 43mm long and they go in just fine.

Looks as if it may be the wrong springs

I just looked in a Barnett catalog online. They only offer one spring set for all the 650s. Other companies offer two, an early and late spring set. Early springs are usually shorter. The only ones I had both sets of were Vesrah. The late set is about 42mm long, the early set only about 37mm long.

What I have now are (stock) 34.63mm
New 43.74

Well, if you install them using a T handle, you should be able to push in on them enough to get them started without stripping the holes. Like I said, late stock springs are nearly that long.

According to the Barnett online catalog
Yamaha XS650 Twin (1975-1979)
Clutch Spring Kit
Part# 501-58-06045
So I have the right one Just seems so long
Maybe use 2 or 3 of the old springs and screws to snug it down and then 1 by 1 put in the new ones

If your bike is in that Span 1975- 1979 it seems right Barnett is not a beginner company --- well known
On the other hand I have an 1980 with the same Strange locking washer.
Just because they look a little longer it is not necessarily so that they are stiffer at the installation.
Careful at the installation and a function test
Looks right

II saw where they were talking about the new springs only being 15% more
What your showing is at about 40mm the new ones I have are at 43.74
I am going to get a set of the ebc springs Installing the Barnett springs just seems like to much of a battle and the idea of stripping out the screw holes is just something I don't want to happen
Thanks to all of you for your help !!! :bow2:
Now just be thankful I don't live in your neighborhood to stop by with questions (you can ignore me here)
I've got to go out in the garage and get ready for the local chapter of the He Man Women Haters Club
Beer and B.S. will be provided

EBC offers two different sets. The ones Gary is showing I'm pretty sure is the CSK14 set, the set for the '80 and later 6 plate clutch. I've used those and found them to be about 42mm long. They also offer a different set for the older 7 plate clutches like yours, the CSK2. I never had those so can't say how long they might be. I suppose either would work. Now, I don't have any actual data to back this up, but I'm thinking the CSK14 set make be slightly stiffer than the CSK2 set since it had to make only 6 friction plates grab as opposed to 7 on the earlier clutch.

FWIW, I went through a bit of clutch spring confusion several months ago. My clutch was slipping, and getting worse and worse, and I finally had to do something about it. I took the above pic, and was going to start a thread on what I found. I wish I had, because now, I sort of forget the details. Anyways, I finally figured out that my clutch was slipping because I had a 6 plate clutch that should have had the longer springs, but didn't -- it had the short 7 plate springs in it. Along the way, I discovered that there are different spring wire thicknesses. The genuine Yamaha NOS springs that I bought were wound from 2.6mm diameter wire, while my old springs springs were wound from 2.3mm diameter wire. I should have added the length in the above pic, but I'm pretty sure these were both 7 plate short springs. (I ended up buying both long and short NOS springs before I got everything sorted out.) I guess if there is anything helpful to be taken from this, it's to check both spring length AND spring diameter when you're replacing clutch springs.

BTW, I think it's worth mentioning that I was readily able to find both short and long genuine Yamaha NOS springs on eBay in sealed original factory packaging at reasonable prices. I like my clutch pull just fine as it is, and I didn't want to make it 15% harder, or worse, which is why I was reluctant to buy aftermarket.
