Hi I’m new here name is Josh!
I have an 82 and was working on the bike tonight and I broke this wire.
Can you tell me what this is and how important it is?

Welcome Josh. That’s an easy one. It’s your neutral indicator switch. It doesn’t look broken though. Just loosen that Phillips screw on top and slide it in and tighten down. Worst case you may need to squeeze the ends together a bit. Good luck.

No problem, that is your neutral indicator light switch. Haven't owned an 82 but do not think that would in any way affect the running or cause any trouble other than not have I neutral light.

Well, it might cause some issues on an '82 model because there are a couple of safety relays that rely on it.
