Single carb conversion thread...

They still manufacture them and according to my friend who owns a Triumph and a BSA “the new ones are light years ahead of the old ones as far as casting and tolerances” For the record, I have ridden the BSA and it is gutless compared to an XS but it carbureted very clean and is a joy to ride. That being said once I find a nice 2-1 intake solution I’m sure my Kiehin FCR will be on a whole other level!

I shot Greensand a message on FB, I don't know if I'll get a response. Really must have missed out on the golden years of building an XS

Uh Yeah, I do have a brand new pair of Amal Premeres on my Norton Commando.
Replacing the pair of Amals with a two into one and a Mikuni is a VERY popular Norton mod prolly big with triumph and beezer owners also.

With an AMAL??????
Jeesus I'm posting this on a Norton forum!
They're gonna be peeing their pants.
Yep, He makes Bonnie style Amal adapters as well as tiger/trophy style intakes for XS’s.

I don't think you did. Greensand Foundry has only been doing this for a few years and there are more XS focused websites and builders now than there ever have been. Hugh's Hand Built, TC Bros, MikesXS, Hoos Racing, YamahaXS650.com, 650 Central, Monster Craftsman, and Hieden not to mention all the sites that sell loads of XS compatible after stuff in addition to there target bikes like MotoLanna, Maund Speed, Cruizin Image, and Lowbrow just to name a few. It's a great time to be building XS650's.

Dual Amals on an XS650! I always wondered if anybody had ever done that. Like I said, I always thought they were decent and affordable carburetors. :)
Lowbrow has these Wassell "Amal" 30mm carbs for a fraction of the price of actual Amal's, I had a pair on my T140 (750cc Bonnie) I had zero problems with them. Full disclosure they do look like carbs that have been soaked in Simple Green, kinda hazy, flat, & grey. I'm guessing they are pretty high in zinc in the alloy.

Americans adapting English parts to fit on Japanese bikes, I guess that's why they call it a hobby... :sneaky:
The great melting pot? I suppose that's politically incorrect these days.
Someone will install a hand shifter next.
Not like I'm the kind of guy would leap into a rabbit hole.

There are LOADS of Jockey shift foot clutch XS choppers out there, I've even seen a few tank shift XS's. You can bet good money anything thats EVER been done to a Harley or Triumph chop has also been done to an XS.

Honda is camming their 270 degree parallel twins differently for each cylinder one side; low RPM torque, the other; high RPM horsepower. No reason your couldn't do the same with unequal length XS650 intakes.

I'm hoping to incorporate a large plenum with very short runners, which should go someway to solving the problem of the acute angle between plenum and runner.
I know as much about intake theory as I do about quantum physics.... so take this with a grain of salt.....
What about a large plenum with velocity stacks inside it. It's one of those weird ideas I've toyed with (in my head) over the years.

I did it in 74 I think. The XS2 I had then had a habit of loosing throttle when cruising, you would be riding along on a constant throttle then the engine would stop pulling then come back again.
I fitted a pair of concentric from a Triumph Bonneville, while they were better in some ways and cured the problem I thought it was a backward step having to tickle the carbs.

Some stuff to think on there. Unfortunately, if I did make the plenum larger it would only be in mm, simply not enough room for stacks as well as a reasonably straight carb inlet into thhe plenum. I must admit though, that's a very worthwkhile thought, just not enough room. I'm not sure how the engine would react to tuning for low rpm torque and high rpm power, it's sort of fighting itself. And there's the problem with one cylinder running hotter than the other, which apparently is a problem with unequal length runners. Something tells me I'll be building more than one manifold. 270 degree twins are a different animal to 360s. Give me a Brig twin with a Mikuni, then I'll be home!

We had a member that spent forever with mebby a Joe wiseguy two into one and a 36mm Mikuni but finally got it running well. He was a child psychologist from New Jersey? think it was a TX650. Really enjoyed his posts, I think his work was very stressful and the XS was an outlet to help get his mind off what he had to deal with professionally.
HaHa @TeeCat it's THIS thread! LOL I see he was here just a couple months ago, So HI TC and how goes it?
