What have you done to your XS today?

I keep going back to the Yamaha manual pp.64 / xs-2 ft. fork and this photo of the ft. fork valves I pulled out. See that black perforated disc on the ruler? That was on that valve. I thought I'd lost it's mate for the valve tube on the bottom while messing w/ the hex bolt. However, I can't find any reference to that black disc even being apart of the deal. All i see is the cir clips down on that end...nd not a part of the assembly. Wonder what that disc came off of? valve assmbly.JPG

Just so you know I have an album of photos from my XS2 forks and swingarm.

http://www.xs650.com/media/albums/1972-xs2-forks-assembly-and-swingarm-details.3129/

My forks have that disc. These photos show the exact order of all the parts. Even though the exploded diagram doesn’t show it, it’s there. You wouldn’t believe how messed up my original forks were. Missing parts, bent lower leg, broken off fender mount.

Thx Mr. Mailman. yes, I did see what you went through with the XS-2 forks. My delema is just a snake in the road...By the time that part shows up in my garage or my machinist's mayhem....well, better me get that part. Here's that ft.wheel I finished spoking last night.P1010102.JPG

Wow what a beauty!
My "easy" motor wake up hit a snag last night when I went to install the stator.

Have I mentioned this had been a crash victim? :wtf:
Looks like some fiddling will be the first order of the day.
Well fun was had....
Center punch and LH drill bits.

The moment of truth.

My back starts sweating right about here.
This was the good news.

It didn't break off, whew. But the remaining shell of that bolt stub just laughed at me.
So kept drilling all the way up to the thread ID

Tapped in and picked out what I could of the bolt remains.

clean with a tap, installed rotor and stator, it wasn't pretty but held the bolt, whew.

While working on this one, the shed door was open.

Like moths to a flame.
From a bike I had and sold, the motor known as "smoker", replaced with another motor by the current owner, it came back home to roost. :(

Got the tank clean. Reassembled. Port side died. Removed carbs and sprayed the snot out of the port side. Reassembled. Starts first kick. Left side only fires if I cover the idle air port on the carb with my finger.

Still dealing with junk in the idle circuit I reckon.

Also the Marvel Mystery Oil was running through and fouled the plug.

Things are looking up.

I did a glue-less torque down on the cylinder head using the Vesrah VG-246 gasket set. used some .074" solder over the crowns and sides of pistons @ TDC. The solder got sqooshed to 0.059-.060" both sides...The hard rings around the head gasket were 0.048-0.050" all around compressed once. Don't know what that means on std. 447 pistons and rings made to a slight hone on the liners as far as CR ratio goes. I do know my pistons have clearance if the books piston clearance is 0.002-0.0022". Oh, could not find that # 11 bolt in the back...If I knew the exact size spec. I'll find another at the HW store. I know the dia. and thread, just not the exact length. pics: if that #2 side looks lower in the hole, it is. #1 has the old o-ring at the base and #2 has a new one..Wanted to see if the new one was as resilient after compression.
>> Did some sanding polishing. The group shot shows the end product/ alternator cover arts removing some deep vertical gouges and other crap with a 130/150 paper; 320 alum. oxide rotary ball; a 400 ball; 400 wet paper; 800 wet paper;1000 wet; 2000 wet;2500 wet and a 5000 pad before white compound on a buffer and then Blue Magic polish except for the lettering part....may need black paint touch up. I may not try for the "chrome"/ "mirror" look on the case covers. Those covers, one you see I agonized over getting corrosion and marks out of. they're both going to the vapor blaster as it seems it's good at getting that corrosive stain out. Just a bit of wet paper and polish they will be done. P1010128.JPG

Can't beat that 1 hour turn around on blasting...almost don't want to do anything but just a bit of polish/ sealant. Experiment on the bottom, underneath side a bit.

Went test driving around the hood. The main fuel outlet on the petcock quit. I put the filter back on during reassembly but it must be plugged. Runs on reserve.

Left side fires immediately under throttle. First time ever. Still a little stumbly at idle. Keep getting a big slug of water in the fuel line, but its a little less everytime. I'm sure the port side plug is unhappy at that.

Cant get the air screws to do anything noticeable. I wonder if they're the wrong ones.

Cheers yall

Here's a useful tip for ya.
The P/N... 97014-06035-00. The second series of numbers after the first dash. 06035..... the 06 is the diameter....6mm. The 035 is the length....35mm.

That is a useful tip...Thanks Jim. Of course, yesterday I brought a 6mm 1.0 home in 30mm length. The little things are wearing me out. Not this bolt.

Today I started removing everything from engine in preparation of removal for top end overhaul. Valve stem seals are shot so may as well replace piston rings and hone barrels while I am in there.

Port side carb still wont fire at idle until you ride a bit. Then it's fine. Methinks some skulduggery is being perpetrated upon me by the previous owner in the way of incorrect replacement parts.

Time to disassemble and measure everything with calipers. Prolly should have done that to begin with.

Cheers yall

Not so much what I did to my xs, but I bought a new helmet today. No miles in it yet, but I’m pretty happy with the fit and finish.

HooWee! That’s a nice looking lid Rob! Is that a new model? I’ve never seen it. I thought I was looking at reflections of something on the top, then I realized it was vent holes. Snappy visor too! That’s Bad Ass!
