I bought this bike with this Commando style exhaust installed. Has anyone got any experience with making these a bit quieter? Is it even possible to do so? They appear sealed and no way to alter them? Insert some sort of packing into the header pipes? I like the look and would prefer to keep them, but they're pretty loud.

If they are the older Heiden/Mikesxs versjon, check at the tail end whether the M10 bolt in the Center is missing or mounted. They are a bit quieter with that bolt installer

I believe they were bought about 2017 from XS650direct in Canada, which was selling mostly MikesXS parts. I'll check for that part number after work today. Thanks.

Inter-aural high density polyvinyl blockage devices will quite that thing right down.:D Otherwise modifying the mufflers will thusly affect flow and performance. I would say a different/quieter set of mufflers might be in order.

Take a picture of the outlet end, with sufficient light to see the baffle, to verify what type/ version of these "commando" mufflers you have.

Fair point on the inter-aural devices! I usually use them while riding my other bike but have found they just amplify this bike's vibration through my head ! Perhaps will try again. I can't find any part number identification on the pipes, at least while leaving them installed, so attached are the photos I took of the inside. Is the hole in the centre threaded to receive the bolt that ArcticXS mentioned? I presume so.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, that hole is threaded and the muffler comes with a short Allen bolt to plug it if you like. I tried mine both ways and prefer them with the bolt installed. I can't say it quiets them down a whole lot but I think they sound better, less raspy, with the bolt installed.

I'll betcha you could affect the tone by using an even longer bolt fully threaded to the head with either a large diameter flange head shape or a larger washer fastened with an additional nut.
Exhaust note may be tunable in a similar fashion, but obviously internally, to old supertrapp style muffler which were infact tunable in both sound and performance.

Just avoid dropping the bolt when installing it. I did just that, and it took a lot of shaking to get it out. Some heavy grease om the 8 mm Allen socket/ in the hex may help.
The safest option is to remove the muffler from the bike, and hold it vertical, tail end down, while starting the bolt. They are regular M10x1.50. Either 16 or 20 mm long.

i have a set of mile pipes I had to get through rego in Australia, packed the ends with steel wool and wired it in. When the mecho asked me to start it up had a major backfire and blew steel wool all over his floor. Said "fk. new I should have gone genuine" he cracked up and gave me the cert. Lucky I guess....
