Javelina encounter

An abattoir is just that and its the way we do things, some may have better practices than others but an animal is going to be stressed in that environment, cant be avoided.
You're right they do have some stress. Not as much as you might think. With the speeds the kill operations have run there is going to be trade offs. I've never been in one but I've read about kosher beef kills. Very interesting procedures. Does not lend itself to high speed and volume. There are reasons kosher beef is much better than average.

Look at it this way............A truck roles up to the pen holding the animals. The driver uses a prod and often times it an electric prod and this gets used. the animal is carted to the Abattoir, riding in a truck that is a completely new environment, often stopping on the way to pick up more animals. Strange animals, or even from the same heard, get crushed together and this creates aggression between the animals and stress. Unless there is a full crate loaded they could be in there for an hour or more going around different farms getting a load. First on is not only stressed by the situation but also is now thirsty, hot cramped environment. You can see it in their eyes and they voice the stress.

Gets to the Abattoir, again prodded to get off the truck and, well, from there on its how the different abattoirs staff treat the stock..............there is a lot of stress before they get to you

Ours came by the semi load. All the animals on a trailer came from the same place. When I started there they did use electric prods then around 95 they had to quit using them. There was a livestock building with pens. Enough to hold more than a days kill if needed. Pigs showed up 24 hrs a day. A lot came from as far away as Canada. Rule was they had to have at least 1 hour rest in a pen to calm down and drink water. A dehydrated pig does not stun well. Their resistance goes up. Don't ask how I know. A fluke will measure a pigs resistance. There were a lot of other things done to treat them humanly. Some to make PETA happy, some to get better quality meat.

Wow this is an interesting thread. From beginning to end. I love seeing wild life as well. I live in a suburb saw a possum a few weeks ago and a few days ago found a dead one behind the bike shed. N I go up to the country family property every season which is awesome for animals and stars. I was digging the back and forth from Australia to states and experiences. We had a huge Hawaiian themed pig roast party when I was a kid. Whole pig, shot behind the ear if I remember right. From a small farm nothing like a volume operation. Wow that shit was goooood! We made a manual roasting spigot, A bigger taller fire pit and wow talk about good. It was a younger pig an 50 pds if I remember right.

We used to roast whole hogs for friends / family gatherings (125 lbs ? )
The ones we got were injected by the butcher with his 11 Polish herbs and spices
This Polish butcher was quite the character he offered my buddy's kid a piece of water melon and said to my buddy "dis is for the dads" (shot of moonshine)
It was very tasty (roasted over night 18 hrs ?? in a homemade roaster made out of a 265 gal fuel oil barrel)

Shot last week, early April, farm field behind our property.

That is very cool! I love how those Tom turkeys are strutting around like peacocks. Do you see wild turkeys frequently?
Of course when I first saw those Javelina the other day , I had left my phone at home. Now I take it with me every day and I probably won’t see another one for a year! :laugh2: I’ve lived here two and a half years now and I’ve only seen them four times. They are mostly nocturnal. I frequently see their tracks passing through our backyard. I’ve given thought of hanging a game camera on the tree in our backyard. I really should do it, I know there are Bobcats around here too, but I’ve never seen one.

Yeah they are frequently seen from the road just around the corner from us and now and then in our pasture.
Also wood rat deer, 'yote, possum, coon, We have heard a bobcat and some nearby game cams have caught them, also; wolf, fox, black bear, crane, hawk, eagle, owl.
It's a regular zoo 'round here!

Man , I’ll say! You’ve got em all where you live! One morning my wife and I were taking a sunrise walk and directly in front of us a Fox stuck its head out of a storm drain and looked around , when it saw us it zipped right back down! :laugh2: Our storm drains don’t see much rain around here, I imagine that fox had a den in there.

They are normally shy peaceful creatures, mostly nocturnal. They have on occasion attacked people, but it’s usually because they’ve been surprised and feel cornered. Like I said they have poor eyesight, but their sense of smell and hearing is keen. They are naturally protective of their young, and they have some wicked big teeth.

I had a thermo prof at Queen's in the late 1970's who looked just like that....

I just wanted to revisit this thread, there have been several encounters this last week , 2 In Tucson and one in Phoenix, where people out walking their dogs at sundown have ran into Javelinas. These were in urban settings and in all cases the Javelinas were surprised. The dogs usually start it by being aggressive and the Javelinas finish it because they gots some big teeth and are willing to use them! :yikes: Three dogs bitten pretty savagely , and one guy got his foot chomped while trying to kick the Javelina off his dog.

Score: Javelina 3, Humans and dogs 0

Here doggy doggy doggy……..

Short clip of Javelinas fighting,

Well yesterday I had a big beautiful fluffy coyote in my backyard, it was sporting its winter coat and was quite a sight. Then last night when we were walking our little dog , a couple passing by in a golf cart stopped to tell us that a Bobcat was just up the street ahead of us, just hanging out on the front porch of a house. Just about 150 yards from our house. They showed us some photos they took , it was not the least bit afraid of them. ( not my photo , but it looked exactly like this)

They have a habit of turning up in residential areas during the fall and winter months, although I have never seen one in person, my whole life.

We‘ve also seen a Kit Fox once, it popped up out of a storm drain right in front of us, it was startled and ducked right back down! I also saw one running with a duck in its mouth that it had caught by the golf course pond.

Thats cool. recently reading about how the coyote has spread throughout most of the Us due to their only natural predator, Wolves, being hunted out in some areas and to near extinction. This has let the coyote spread and the damage from them to wildlife and farmers has been, is, worse than when wolves were present.

Bob cat looks real pretty. Tabby cats always look more interesting

Is the fox natural species or introduced??

You also have some great wildlife around your area.
