Hi all, Its been a while... hope that all is well with the folks on here...

I'm in the midst of trying to get "classic plates" for my 73, and I'm looking for some info on the frame reflectors on the 73 TX650... I've seen photo's with and without...

My 73 being a basket case, did not come with them, and my frame does not seem to have provisions for them to bolt on to the frame tubing.

Does anyone have a picture of what the reflectors mount on to (shown below...not my bike)? Perhaps some kind of frame clamp, or perhaps a piggy back bracket on to the horn assembly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was looking at reference photos year by year, the first three model years they were fork mounted. In 1973 they moved the location to the frame, where it appears to stay for the rest of the standard models run. Here are some shots from my ‘77. Do you have anything like this on your frame? A little threaded stand off, just below the steering head and in front of the horn.

Partzilla shows the reflectors mounted like the 72s to the fork legs. Wouldn't take it for gospel thou they could have done a production change during the year.

Other side of the same bike, obvious where the bracket has broken off. NOT vibration related.

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies... No such luck with a threaded standoff, just the usual crappy frame welds... which I guess leads me to conclude that I have a 72 frame?? Mailman, do you have a pic of your 72 in this area? I would be interested to see if the weld and sleeving is similar in this area...

Unfortunately the reflectors stand out like sore thumbs from the point of view of someone reviewing for authenticity... All the cool marketing brochures and mint resto's show them on the frame... I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that the reviewer doesn't pick up on this....

gggGary.... THANKS so much... so it looks like it was piggy backed on to the horn assembly...

But why only the one side, was the other side of the c-shaped bracket cut off?

gggGarys pic corresponds with the 73TX parts manual...........Part #28 - 31

partzilla wrong again. Around the 72/73/74 bikes, and using partzilla you need to cross reference to be sure your correct

That side of the bike had sustained some weird damage like something had been rubbing against it in transport.

.
The good news is a bracket can easily be fabricated and it would take a really savvy judge to see it wasn't the original.
This is a factory replacement tank often seen on the 73's the originals tended to have a rear seam start leaking.
Skull that fiche of yours shows the bracket upside down, even Yamaha gets things wrong...

well it is better to be upside down in the right place, than shown to be in another place and attache wrong.........especially if your promoting your self as a parts supplier

Note the design error, if the bracket was isolated by a second grommet instead of being captured by the bolt head it probably wouldn't break from the vibration.

Why in the world is anyone still using Partzilla, or any of the other commercial on-line parts fiches? They all suck, and Partzillla is particularly bad.

As I keep saying, for on-line drawings, use biker.net:
http://www.biker.net/650parts_index.html
Go to the 70-73 parts manual, go to frame, and you get a drawing that shows the correct 73 reflector mount bracket in a diagram inset.
Biker.net isn't perfect, but it's good.

Old small round aluminum rimmed reflectors were once easy to find for pocket change at salvage yards. They help the look of the XS's in my opinion cheating in a small way to appear early 70's.
Early license plate reflectors are gems as well.
