Question for the carb. Pros

Yes, you need to cap both. Why would you leave one open, lol. Best cap is the Yamaha original. I tried vacuum caps from the auto parts store but they didn't last. They'd split in a month or so. As I mentioned earlier, your manifolds are going to split on you if you don't get the metal covers for them. They are very important, especially if you're going to run pods. They add needed support.

You can't buy the metal covers any more, you'll have to scrounge some. Check eBay.

Damn that’s not good I had some when I order the carbs but they were bs38 and I sent them back I don’t think they would have fit anyway

Yep, but if you use the caps from Big Box Auto Parts you'd be well advised to carry spares; genuine Mikuni caps are a lot more robust and durable. My crude homemade fixture is also durable, but a little fugly--a piece of blue fuel line blocked off with a short screw and secured with a hose clamp. Can't recall whether it was Pamco Pete or John Underwood who recommended it, but you can also join the vacuum barbs with a piece of line.

When I can't find the proper cap, I have used a section of 5mm VW braided rubber fuel line with a spent 22 cal shell pushed in. It fits in nice and tightly, and the fuel line fits the manifold tightly. No need for clamps.

I shoot squirrels from my living room window, so I've always got a handful around.

Small ball bearing also works well. Just make sure it has a bigger diameter than the hole in the vacuum port.
Edit: Just so there is no misunderstanding bearing goes into a short piece of fuel line.

I always clamp, our old gals are not immune to a backfire that'll spit the caps right off.
Hasn't happened yet to one of my 22 caliber nylon braided VW non-clamped homemade caps, but if one of them gets "shot off" the manifold,
I will certainly report it !
(pun intended) :)
