Xs650 1983 headlight problem

Reply #1....... Hey! Welcome aboard. Tell us a bit about you and your bike, doesn't have to be too detailed but a little sumpin'.

Reply #3........Welcome aboard! Sometimes the bulbs do burn out and have to be replaced. Not sure of your experience or how long you've had the bike but to access the speedo bulb you'll have to lift the speedo out of its chrome bucket, access from below.
The headlamp comes on when you tickle the ignition by either starting the bike or attempting to start the bike.....one of those newer model improvements there that most could do without. If the lamp doesn't come on it could be the bulb too, I would check with a known good headlamp or ohm between the three plug ins......I forget how that reads but would compare it to a known good lamp.......buy a spare. They don't cost anything to feed them once purchased.

Aye, a bit of custom accessories.
The yellow wire may need to be hooked up. Thinking I disconnected mine on my old '83 when I was bypassing some of the safety features and I lost the headlight, hooked it back up and all was well.
You might want to look in to simplifying your wiring. Look in the Tech tab under "Electrical" for some schematics. If you're going to get in to custom electrical fabrication you'll be the expert of your bike.

Good luck!

The yellow wire from the alternator feeds power to the safety/headlight relay. Once the alternator makes about 4.5 volts on the yellow wire it trips the relay. This sends power to the headlight.
If you are building your own wiring, inthe electrical section under Some Wiriing Diagrams look for #4. I like this diagram. It shows the basic points version with squares with the later TCI and Combo reg/rec. The E-Start with the safety relay is in the upper right corner.
With a few minor mods this diagram works for most any combo of parts you can come up with.
