XS2 scrambler build

Ahhh ..this good thing Friends ... don't have any .. so I have to weld myself
not seldom regretting it

I have a friend that has a proper shop where he can re-weld it on

But that cap was expensive $ 43 + freight I put it here as an option if the friend has the shop it is perhaps not entirely impossible to weld or bolt the missing part back onto the existing cap .. Bending Hammer and drill + few weld spots
There is also small holes in the latch part and the rubber seal is behind the mechanism
Something would be possible to manufacture --- perhaps small bolts
$ 50 here and $ 50 there can become a big grand total .. And if there are things not yet Known on the bike .. A plan can be not to buy new non functional parts just yet

I'll have him take a look at it. I really do not want to damage my gas tank since getting a new one is gonna cost me. Does anyone have pictures of a working one? just so can understand it better.

Edit ... perhaps i got this wrong ..Is it the mechanism or the cap itself ??

If it was me I would use the pictures at the link
Not done the thinking or design but is it not the cap that is broken ..and will be removed from the tank . When the work is done so the thank can be stashed away in a safe place when the job is done
Dont forget to remove gasket and other things that wont withstand the heat

I would look at Rectangular tubes please look below I have not been in a steel builders shop yet that does not have some of them
Cutting of a piece and cutting of one flat side and were getting close ..the pin can be a bolt that is only threaded a short piece at one end
or if a pin at both

Many ways to do it ..depending on time material skills .But It looks possible without having seen the cap

Be very careful removing the pin that holds the latch in place. The tabs it runs through is cast aluminum... and not overly strong. Soak it with PB Blaster or such and take your time.

I haven't messed with the latch yet. It didn't look rusty but I still decided to soak it in PB blaster for the night. I checked the eBay listing and didn't see any years/models listed. Just want to confirm will it work for a 72 XS2?

How are things going? Just haven't seen any progress. I know my time in the garage is slim to none right now. When I do get a chance I never think about taking any pictures.

Things are going decent. I order another batch of parts that should get the bike road-worthy. I went to pick up the title last weekend and he hadn't yet look for it witch was kinda sad. My neighbors brought me a four-wheeler that needs a bit of TLC that I have been occupied by mostly. Sorry for the lack of updates. The only things I hope I will need to buy now are jets and an exhaust. I know jetting really depends on what you got but does anyone have a build similar to mine (everything stock except pod filters and new mufflers). Speaking of mufflers am having some issues with mine. I plan on changing them but currently, they keep falling off the bike. I have the clamps that connect to the tube super tight and I even tried putting some jb weld putty on them. but they still fly off. I know I don't have the rear bolt on since it doesn't fit with the shock raisers. but I feel like just the clamps should be good to hold them. Also speaking of the exhaust does anyone have any recommendations? My main concern is the length since these shock extenders will block them. Here are a few pics to make everything hopefully make sense.

I know the bike looks kinda crusty in these pictures I plan on attempting to fix all the rust on the axle when I remove the wheel for a tire change. Oh yeah, and these pics are when the bike is on the center stand so the suspension is dropping more than usual.

I almost forgot. This weekend my seat should finally be mounted. This is my first time having access to a welder so am really looking forward to it. I don't want to do anything too crazy but I was reading a thread about skid plate and someone made one out of a grain shovel. I feel like that would be a nice touch and also somewhat protect the bottom of my engine. There wasn't much detail about it. I would need to figure out a way to have it be detachable since my oil drain bolt would be right above it. I plan to pick a shovel up tomorrow evening. here is a link to the thread and a couple of pics.

Well that should be interesting. Take lots of pics.

I was just checking in to see what you were doing with it. It's been so damn hot recently here that getting out in the garage after working in the heat all day just isn't happening. Being young, you can probably stand the heat better

The heat is defentailly a pain. I just try to keep hydrated and take breaks to chill in the ac. The even bigger problem wearing a full-face helmet and a leather jacket on hot days. The ride makes up for it though ;)

Well, I have good news and bad news. The bad is the trip to the shop has been rescheduled for Thursday. On the other hand, I spent the time getting my gas tank complete. Also got to take my dad's rmz 450 ( motocross dirt bike) out and that inspired me to work on the project so I would have something almost as fast.

I managed to get the gas tank latch off the xs400 ( that bike has become somewhat of a donor know). After 15 minutes with a hand file, I was able to get it on the bike. It appears to be shorter than the factory one. I had to remove a bit of stuff from the gas cap but was able to make it work. Now I just need to figure out a gasket. I read about using an inner tube tire but they seem to not last very long. Here are some pics to make this make sense .

thru this process, I got a lot of dirt/rust in my tank so I plan on rising it with toilet bowl cleaner again

This is the adjuster removed it so the gas cap would sit lower.

Question.

How do you remove the side badge emblems? honestly don't know what to call them. I was about to try hitting the pens with a hammer but thought it might be better to ask first. also, I don't really care about saving the badge.

Save the badges if you can. They are a desirable part if original. I don't have experience in removing those, but I am sure someone will chime in shortly.

I'm sure someone would be willing to trade side covers without badges for those. Please don't break those, the originals are getting super rare!

If you move your muffler tabs to outside of the bracket it will give the clearance you need at the axle and allow you to put the bolts back in. might have to add some spacers to the forward stays.

I use a little cut off wheel in the dremel to slice a slot in the thin metal retainer clips, a small screw driver then pops them off.

Haven't done anything to them yet. On the other side cover, the C is missing. I plan on eventually changing the side covers so I will leave them on. Tonight we are hopefully taking the bike to get the seat on. After that's on there I am going to use some cardboard and try to design a side cover. Something like this

Speaking of the exhaust It may be "fixed". I rode it for about 20 minutes yesterday half in my front yard half in my neighborhood. If they fall off I will try turning them around.

I might have asked this before but what way is choke on/off on the carbs? When I had the choke lever down. the bike would idle fine but backfire like crazy, I'm guessing that is choke on. I will grab a picture of it later today to show what I mean. Also will be posting a video after I get my seat on.

Yes BS38 choke lever; down is on, up is off.
Pushing down on the lever lifts the choke plungers off the seats letting a rich mix into the intake.
