I’ve spent the better part of the day shopping from my recliner for two things, tires for my wife’s car and a folding multi purpose ladder ( think Little Giant ).

Everything has gotten so expensive! The car is a little econo box Toyota, the tires are not huge. Half of tires I was interested in we’re out of stock, the rest are stupid expensive! I’d sure hate to see what tires for a Corvette or a big ass truck would cost. :yikes:

Then there’s the ladder , Harbor Freight used to sell a Little Giant knock off , you could get it on sale all the time for $99. I’ve been waiting for the Labor Day Sale, and now that it’s finally here….and it’s not on sale. :( They want $150 ( it’s alright for $99 but not $150 )
Most of these multi purpose ladders are selling for anywhere’s from $180 - 300! So after way too much time looking around online, I decided on a 15 foot Gorilla ladder at Home Depot, heavy duty and well made on sale for $150 online.

I really wanted it now , so I checked store inventory. NADA, ZIP, ZILCH :cautious:. I could order it online and they’ll ship it to me for free. Ok, seems reasonable. But when I went on the Gorilla website they had a big fat warning that said, due to high demand and supply chain problems you could experience a delay…please be patient. Patience is not my strong suit. Recent rains exposed a leak in my roof, and I think I know where the problem is, but I can’t get up on the roof with my current ladders.
Oh I could go to the store and pick up something bigger and more expensive than I need but :hellno: .

One more gripe, then I’ll shut up. It took me a while to figure out a little scam that all these ladder makers are running. They lie about the size of these ladders. When they are fully extended they are not as long as they try to make you think they are. A fifteen foot ladder is actually less than twelve. An eighteen foot ladder is less than sixteen. How they describe them is like this “ 18ft reach ladder” meaning when you stand on the highest safe rung and reach up, you can reach 18’. Seriously? What kind of BS is that?
Imagine you bought a sofa online that was advertised to be an 8’ sofa and when you got it it measures 6’. You call the company up and say what gives? They say “ Well, when you hang your arm off the side, you can reach 8’.”

#1 don't buy one of the folding ladders.
Trust me; I did, and you can have it.
get a good old aluminum extension ladder that will reach about 3-4' above your roof.
Make a couple easy peasy brackets and it'll sit out of the way on your garage ceiling.
Folding ladders are;
Too heavy:cussing:
REALLY Awkward to fold/unfold. :(
The one I got did not have a wide enough base, it's not very stable....
 Get your wife to go up on the roof.

I hate those effing folding ladders. I don't think I've EVER managed to fold/unfold one without pinching something. Not to mention the hernia from lugging it around.

I have an 8 foot fiberglass ladder and that's about as high as I care to get these days. I do have a 28 foot extension ladder but it ain't been off the hanger in years.

My Mom told me 15 years ago that I shouldn't go on roofs anymore. I listened to her. When I had my roof redone 12 years ago I made sure I was out of town working when it was done. When it needed repaired a couple of years age after a tree fell on it the guy that built my shop repaired it for me. I also had no-cleaning needed gutters installed a couple of years ago.

35+ years of humping extension ladders to play on joint use telephone poles to fix John Q. Public's cable t.v.
When I started out in the biznez we used 24' wooden extension ladders, they don't bounce well. Fiberglass bounces better and it won't kill you like aluminum will if you hit a line with power on it.........
Keep yer alu and wooden ladders, I go with glass.

I bought a Wolfwise telescoping ladder (from the Amazon) for my travel trailer. For something made of aluminum, it's heavier than I expected, but it retracts down to nothing, and stows in the cargo compartment perfectly. They make a 15.5 ft. model (dunno if that's gonna have enough "reach" for you). If storage space is at a premium (as it is in my trailer), it might be the way to go...

20-24' extension is the sweet spot, I have a 32' and it's pretty hard to get it upright by myself.
(just) the bottom half of a 24 is VERY easy to use, stand up. Check CL and facebook you'll find a nice used one at a good price.
I had a nice 32' ladder. Loaned it out and after 30 excuses, never saw it agaian.

I love my foldable. Lay a plank on it when folded to platform mode and it is good for staining house, waxing boat. A frame is good for cleaning gutters. Folded up I can go do both daughters gutters until the BFs figute it out.

Yeah, you’ve got me rethinking things. I live in a single story house, it’s only about 9 or 10 feet to the edge of the roof. A 16’ extension ladder would easily extend up beyond that. There are a bunch of them for sale used around here and they would collapse short enough to store pretty easy in my garage. I might just go this way, it’s rare that I would need a tall ladder.
