What have you done to your XS today?

Not a big job but I got the, new to me, foot rests mounted. We all know what they look like. Other side looks about like this one.

But I lifted the cover to get to work and, "What in the world are you doing up there, Boy?"

He said he climbed up to get a better look at the blue dot tail light. Plucky little feller. He's got good taste.
I took him out behind the pond and told him to "Git!" :)

Clip-ons: It's not what you think.
The clutch and front brake perch's on the XS came with mirror bosses. My bike, from the original owner, had plugs in the mirror boss holes and clip-on installed. These ones with handle bar mounts:

The mirrors are convex and smaller than my perch mount mirrors even though they look bigger in the third photo.

Objects closer than they look.jpg

The Clip-on is on the top and I'm holding it in front and against the perch mount. You can see a bigger area in the clip-on but it looks further away. These have held up pretty well over the years. There are shadows on the tops where the silver film is starting to give up, a few pits of rust. But I cleaned and preserved them and stuck them in plastic bags for storage.
Well, slap my Mama! What's the big deal Thu?

They are Yamaha mirrors.

You tell me. Were mirrors optional in 1977? Were these cheaper than perch mount mirrors? Were these used as cheap replacements after the perch mounts were torn off in an accident? I don't know.

What I do know, that feller over there that was looking down his shorts with a magnifying glass; I tried that with one of these mirrors and discovered invisibility!

I always run with my shocks down. I wanted to bump them up about the middle to see how she runs. I thought, Honda's got a spanner in it's tool kit. I wonder if the Yam has one? I dug out the tool kit and dumped the contents onto a red rag. Nope, no spanner. Maybe it got lost. What's that nut?

Does an XS vibrate? Spun the nut off the pliers inside the tool case.
I find the bolt and put it back together. Now What? Really?

Them pliers is from Arkansas! Well, maybe they are slid in the wrong direction?

Nope. No joy! Over bite reminds me of an old girl friend I use to have.
There better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but not much.
I'm done for today. Who uses their tool kit anyway?

I did some work on a TX650. A bunch of work. I was looking for those mirrors. There was a boss for the mirror on the master cylinder, but not on the clutch perch. I assumed the original bike did not us the boss on the right.

Jmm, I don't remember but I know I had to change one and get an adapter to make everything match. No boss on the right could have been it? :umm:

I missed seeing this earlier Thu, did you really buy this bike? I had its sibling a 2007 Bonneville America, it was a great bike!
Yep, I did. My first ride I took off and there were no pegs! Takes some getting used to. Strange thing, it felt like a Triumph. The butt remembered!

It's made that way to install the master link on the chain.

My XS650SK has 60,000 miles on it. The tools have been stripped of their finish and the pouch is full of holes. It's a pleasant vibration.

Well, shit! I just knew I was gona go through the day today without learning something! That's why I have never bought a lottery ticket!
"....It's a pleasant vibration." It really is. I love the thing - and the pull-backs! :bike:
