Real Estate Update

Double check with your insurance agent, get him to inspect and give you written confirmation any garage heater, installation is acceptable.
Rules are pretty strict cuz of leaking/spilled gasoline issues.

See plenty of "garage heaters" on CL and such, you can often tell the insurance told the guy get it out of here.

Nice summation Pete. I guess we will just have to hang our hopes on the most abundant element in the universe….hydrogen. We really are doomed.
Frank Zappa said that the most abundant element in the universe was not hydrogen but in fact it was stupidity. Have you looked at the papers lately ? ? I think he may be on to somethin'.

Got a few more things done while waiting on the power guys:

Finished hanging drywall, got most of the ceiling trim up, built the main bench along the South and West walls. Oil tank is in place and plumbed and wiring run for the air compressor and furnace.

The shop press won't live where it is (obviously...) I'm waiting until I move some of the big stuff in to determine final position.

Plan A is for the alcove to be mostly storage for parts and supplies. Looks good on paper, but we all know how that works...
DE, are you building an ICD-705 compliant SCIF space ? I don't see any windows and the walls are running deck to deck. Whats up with that ?

...to paraphrase a former US president: "Its the battery...." If it is about EVs, it is nearly ALWAYS going to be about the battery.

To prove that point, here is a nice video from CBC News, featuring the attractive and articulate Heather Hiscox (sigh....), about a chap in British Columbia who has a 2013 Nissan Leaf which he likes very much. The problem is that the original Leaf battery has lost capacity (see the above list of operating characteristic issues) to the point where the car is not really very useful any longer. So - this guy wants to buy a new battery, and Nissan has quoted him about $15,000 for it, which he is willing to pay because the rest of the now 9-model year old car is still fine - but - Nissan cannot actually get a new battery for him because those 2013 model batteries are no longer made.
Looks like a great candidate for an LS Swap ! ! ! (Too soon ? ?)

I could tell you, but you don't have The Need To Know. :D

But seriously, folks, two reasons:

1. Windows are major heat leaks.

2 Windows that AREN'T major heat leaks are stupid expensive.

I may find that I have a ventilation issue down the road. If I do I'll install an exhaust fan.

Windows also make nice thief entrance's in shops.

I just haven't been read on to your "program" as yet. Looks like a marvelous shop and I couldn't agree more with your logic. That's why my shop is in my basement without windows as well.

Windows also make nice thief entrance's in shops.

I considered that as well. The only known thieves around here don't mess with me for a couple of reasons:

1. Their Mom and my wife have been buddies since diapers.
2. They know that lump under my shirt ain't a cell phone.

I have windows on 3 sides of the shop 1 side faces the highway and the other 2 sides are visible from the house(50-60" away) and they all have motion floodlights on them so....
But your right a window is just a smaller door if you want to get in
Hell I even have motion sensor lights in the shop so its not too dark for them if they brake in
I'm hoping the lights in and out will at least make em run for it

The 4 enemies of burglars:
1) Time. If breaking in takes too long...
2) Light. If everything is all lit up, it leads to #3
3) Concealment. (or the lack thereof) Don't give them anywhere to hide. If you gotta have decorative shrubbery, make sure it has thorns!
4) Noise. If the only way to break in is noisy, somebody's gonna hear it.
Sticking to these basics, a burglar is going to look for another, softer target, when your house (garage, outbuilding, etc.) says "rob somebody else".

5) a dog with a VERY deep voice.
A little scaredy dog like our current one doesn't cut it. But even friends feared opening the door when the Weimaraner let loose.

Wood Stove: Last winter when Texas went off grid and people were freezing their azzes off?

I need to get the maid in here to do some dusting!

Picked up that furnace today. Good mechanically, a tad ugly cosmetically (who cares?) and included tank-side valve and filter housing and a bunch of ductwork. The bare furnace was listed at $250 and he threw in the other stuff which will save me some cash.

Down-draft style, I'll build a frame to put a plenum under it and duct the heat to a couple different spots in the shop.

What does this furnace burn? Just curious.

Fuel oil. Cheapest option around here.

LOT of gas furnaces out there at better prices, but propane is stupid expensive here ($4/gallon) plus the expense of setting a tank, plumbing the gas line and getting it inspected. Plus, fuel oil doesn't have that nasty habit of exploding...

DE, our house came with an oil burning furnace. Yes, cheapest option, as there's no natural gas here in the "sticks". Our original furnace bit the dust about 10 years ago (40 year old furnace!), so we had it replaced. The new one has a Riello burner. Our furnace guy calls it a "Ferrari", because it is so efficient. Find yourself a furnace person, who specializes in oil furnaces. The better they run, the less they smell, and ours doesn't smell at all...

We have a Buderus oil-fired boiler for the house. Cut my oil consumption nearly in half from the old one installed in the 50's.

I have a furnace guy I trust, he'll come down and install it for me and tune it up.
