DIY Reg/Rec. 5twins and Jim

Here's a $15 one (free shipping), probably the best you'll do at the moment .....
Yeah, that's a good deal. Advance Auto want's 29 bucks. Did a little checking....
BWD is Borg Warner Development. Borg Warner is good quality. They do however outsource some of their parts. From their website...

Of course, with 40,000 parts in the line, we can’t make everything. However, we have the resources and experience to provide the engineering and quality control to ensure that all of the products that are placed in a BWD box still means high-quality. Our Asian sourcing office includes a team in Hong Kong and Taiwan with sourcing and engineering expertise. This team receives significant LIC support with a dedicated Director of International Sourcing, a 20,000 sq. ft. laboratory and test facility, and a dedicated staff of engineers and engineering technicians to ensure excellent quality control.

@itschrisb Please let us know what the quality looks like and how well it regulates when you install it.

Newb question but is this both the regulator and rectifier or only one device? Thx

It automatically disengages the starter when the engine starts and prevents accidental re-engagement while the engines running. It's activated as soon as the alternator starts charging. So it ain't foolproof. If your bike quits charging, it won't "safety" anything.

Only the '81 and later models have the clutch switch to allow starting when not in neutral. By those later models, all the safety B.S. was becoming a bit much. There were relays for the relays, lol.

On my ‘76 when you release the starter button, the starter sounds like it’s momentarily engaged once the engine starts. I have a Pamco set up btw. Is this “engagement” typical on the XS and / or Pamco equipped engines? Thx

So... the VR794's are getting hard to find. I've found this alternate.
Rock Auto. The INFO button lists it as an alternate for the VR794. 20 bucks
If anyone runs across others, please leave a comment.

I bought one of these rectifiers off of Amazon for just over $20. Rated for 100A at 1600V, so I assume they will handle the output of an XS charging system. It mounts cleanly in the space vacated by the reserve lighting unit, if your bike had one and you have pulled it. Three short jumper wires to the OEM connector with spade plugs and bob's yer mother's brother. Negative lead straight to the battery, Positive lead to either the battery or the large lug on the starter solenoid, along with an inline fuse holder for safety. I used 10ga wire for both leads.

Mac, what are the approx dimensions of this piece? Did you add a heat sink? If you’re going directly to the battery, how is the voltage regulated?
