What have you done to your XS today?

Dumped the oil last night. It came gushing out like what happens the morning before your colonoscopy (you old guys will know what I am talking about).
Yep, fuel in the oil. I think that is what was making my leak problem much worse. From the look of things, the oil seems to be coming from the clutch pushrod seal. The area is covered in oil and the rod in the seal is like a broomstick in a barrel.

As to the fuel leak. I guess I'm tearing into a petcock or two.
 
And carburetors! They're leaking as well.
I haven't had to touch them since I got them back from Oldschool way back when. It's about time.
I might take the opportunity this affords and ditch that gawdawful airbox and put on some pods.
 
If the pushrod seal was leaking badly, the area below it would be washed clean. I can't see it in your pic real good, but it doesn't look like it is. What I do see is oil streaks emanating from your countershaft sprocket nut. If that's loose, it will leak oil like crazy. Make sure it's really tight (94 ft/lbs).
 
Cleaned up the area a bit and made a special trip to Lowe's to get a 36mm socket (must have loaned mine out). Turns out it wasn't needed as the sprocket nut was not even hand tight. Thank goodness for the lock tab.

Of course, I already ordered new clutch rod seals and a one-piece pushrod. Should I leave well enough alone or while I am at it...?
 
It isn't a bad job to do - but be sure to chamfer the edge of the hole into which you will press the new seal to avoid cutting it. Also - I would order 2 or 3 of those seals in case you muff the installation the first time.
Good tip, been there, done that. Once chamfered, quite easy to install.
 
I've ridden Buzzy three days in a row to work. I have a whole new/remembered joy in the small bike. And while he needs much care and restoration, he seems to love the open highway speeds and each day seems to run a little better.
Guys at work have shifted from ridiculing me about either an 'old' bike or a tiny 'scooter' and are now talking about how cool a 40 year old machine can be...
 
Very good Boog - and if any of them continue to not take you and your bike seriously, your military training has undoubtedly provided you with a set of skills that would "encourage" them to see things your way! ;)

I took Big Red out for a ride today, carburetors need adjustment.

Since installing my Boyer ignition, Ive been trying to get my carburetors dialed in. The last time I took it out , the carbs were set at factory spec and it fired right off and idled well when it was cold, but when the motor got hot the idle sped way up. So I reached down and backed off the two idle stop screws and it seemed to run fine, but I was freeway blasting that day, so not much low rpm running.

Today however, when I went to start it cold, it took more cranking than normal and idled roughly and missed and popped at idle. Today’s ride was all stop and go with low rpms and a lot of riding with the throttle just barely open.
Once it warmed up the idle seemed fine, but I’m getting lots of popping on decel and when I’m cruising at low speeds with the throttle just barely open, same thing, lots of popping and farting. As soon as I twist that grip it opens up and runs well again.

Here’s my hunch.
I think my pilot / idle circuit is running too lean. I think that was why my idle speed went up on me the first time I had it out. And then when I set the idle speed down , now the lean fueling is causing it to pop and miss at small throttle openings and on decel. When I got home, I set the idle screws back to factory settings and opened up my air screws a half turn. I’ll take it out again soon and see where that puts things.
