70 Stator on a 83 Heritage

I recently found out my 83 stator went bad so i replaced it with a stator from a 70's model (unknown exact year). I installed the pick up assembly on the 70's stator and installed it on the bike. I also put the 83 brushes in the 70's stator because they were still good and long. The bike ran for about 15-20 minutes and then the main 20 amp fuse blew. The brush ashembly still has the metal screws. From reading everything so far I am convinced that nylon screws would be the answer to the fuse blowing. I have gone through my wiring harness numerous times and can not find a short anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated due to riding season being here now.
 
Read from the screw that holds the brush, to the stator. If you see low resistance, you need a nylon screw there.

This thread is similar and has a schematic showing the diff between the two types. Old type, the black wire is grounded at its stator screw.

would not having the nylon screws cause the main fuse to blow? Also does anybody know what size the nylon screws are and where to find them. I have checked Mike's but was unable to locate them.

Yes. It is shorting the brown wire from the battery to ground. You can get the screw size by taking the metal one to a hardware store and trying nuts on it, if you don't have a thread gauge. Also, since you have a tci stator, you might be able to take the brush holder off it and put it on the stator. Might have to mod the stator. Probaby no harder than putting the pickup on it, which you did.
 
if i use the brush holder from the tci stator, i will not need the nylon screws correct, i just need to move the brown/black wire to the top right screw like how it was set up on the tci stator correct?
 
As long as when you're finished you don't read low resistance from a brush holding screw to the stator it's good. The idea is to keep a brush holding screw from making contact with the stator, be that by nylon screw or other means. The brushes still have to line up with the rings on the rotor of course, too, if you try a different brush holder.
 
it worked great, the bike started right up and rode for a while. i just exchanged the old brush holder for the tci brush holder and extended the brown wire to fit the top right screw.
