Helmets, I didn't know that!

I ride with a modular helmet. I had an HJC but it aged-out (I try to not ride with a helmet older than 5-years) and now have an LS2 Valiant which is also nice.

Anyhow, I always wore a full-face lid prior to the HJC modular and I really do like the modular style. I guess they are slightly less safe than a true full-face, but the comfort and convenience are worth it to me.

Yeah. I really like a helmet that fits. I expect a full face helmet is most best protection and that’s what I usually wear. In part it’s because of bugs here. The bugs are thick in Mississippi. Otherwise, I do understand the dog with his head out the window. I like the wind in my face. I had a bad crash in 2016 wearing a half helmet. I hit my head hard enough to suffer a concussion. I wouldn’t have enjoyed that ride with no helmet.

@bosco659 find a Cycle Gear store. If you want to try helmets on, they’re the best option. Especially true if you’re looking at expensive options.
 
I"m going to look at my LS2 helmet to see if that is the case with mine. My Bell Bullet (retro style) that I will be using on the older bikes does not pinch me as much as the LS2.
ATGATT: to each their own.
I do have a 1/2 helmet I have only rarely used. It was more to be a spare in case I had to go 2up.

I’ve watched too many YouTube reviews on helmets lately but was just introduced to the LS2 brand. It came out middle of the pack in the evaluation and I may look at that brand. I like the Modular idea but reading too much makes me concerned about the extra weight. I also have an XL melon (more brains? - or space for brains) so that puts me in the larger shell size right away. I’ll do my US trip and maybe I’ll find something, otherwise I’ll visit one of the larger dealers when I get back.
 
Dogginit, conversation about riding equipment do usually get many varied responses. Why?
Because riders have many different choices.
Selecting the proper gear for yourself greatly depends on where you ride, weather conditions, how far you ride, how fast you ride, season of the year 🐝
All choices can be appropriate!
Because at this stage in my riding life, (very little) I ride only for a short local burst of excitement and pleasure. Only when conditions are right for that enjoyment. So I choose common safety gear and that includes a good fitting safe open face helmet that is also fun to wear

*and check out those recently found evening riding self lighting glasses which may just be bright enough to help see out of the tinted face shield

This feature attracted me to the HJC I100 helmet. The safety rating remains intact for chin bar up or down.

Where is North 40 is this conversation. You guys do know the Bell and the state of California conspired to pass helmet legislation of some sorts and beanies as he puts it are nonsense.

I have an LS2 Stream. It’s a long oval fit. So it’s narrow with more room front and back. No HJC or Bell helmet fits my head. My LS2 was very inexpensive. I think it’s excellent at the price point, but it is no Arai. Mine is full face, not modular. I know someone who bought an LS2 modular and reported it as being junk.

Marty do you recall why the LS2 Modular wasn’t favourable?

Everyone‘s head is a different shape so different brands will fit better than others. I understand many helmet brands offer different thicknesses of cheek pads to customize the fit to your noggin’. I recall last year when I tried a couple of helmets, the pads were so tight on my cheeks, it made the helmet quite uncomfortable. With different pads it probably would have been ok.

XS11.club. “LS2 Helmet - What a piece of junk!” is the thread title. He said it’s “complete trash.”
Mine isn’t modular, but I am happy with it at the price point. I’m especially happy because it fits my head where most don’t. It’s even Pinlock ready.

FWIW, my personal favorite is Arai. I’ve had a couple of them. They’re pricey, but I’ve found nothing more comfortable.
 
In 79 I had a full face FRP Fulmer helmet. I was on the cheaper end (on Lance Corporal pay that is important) and matched my Black w/gold pinstripes 78 XS650 E. The last time I took it off the chin section was wobbly fiberglass cloth, the forehead was wobbly soft fiberglass cloth too, a section on the back was the same. I did not have a concussion after tumbling down the road at 80+ mph. You need a helmet for only the first or second impact, after that it is junk anyway.

Looks like Knoxville, TN has one close by my route to NC. I’ll drop in there.
 
I spent up last year and bought a Shoei dual sport helmet with a brim to keep the sun out of my eyes. I use it on all bikes and now will on the new FJ. Maybe it looks funny to some but it is so practical to shield the direct sun away! It was tight at first on my ears but far and away the most comfortable and lightweight helmet I've ever had. I may get a Bell or similar old school 3/4 helmet this season for around town on the old girl.
Most of the DOT or Snell approved helmets are safe. There are lots of great discussions on them on Fortnine or Revzilla. I wanted a lightweight helmet and I figured I will ride at least 30,000 km with this new helmet.

Every crash is different. Most importantly, don’t drink and ride. Ride defensively. Most motorcycle crashes can be avoided. That school bus coming toward you is going to turn across your path. Be prepared for it.
A helmet is a pretty good idea.

FWIW, I believe the greatest portion of helmetless fatalities also involve alcohol and or other risky behavior.
 
I have LS2 Valiant.
I get some wind noise but need to compare it to other helmets I have or were given.
Fit is good to me. I"m not a Helmet Evaluator to really compare them to others.

School bus, you talking about the father of 6 in Tx? that was speeding w/o a helmet and died hitting the tail end of a bus as he broke and not swerved?
I'm 58 and still play ice hockey. I can't imagine doing that w/o a helmet let alone fall from the bike or hit something.

I'm working from probability here. Just cause I have never hit another car on the road in my life of driving for 42 years does not mean it won't happen now.

Yeah. I happened to see the video of that accident not long ago. That was a terrible loss and it was avoidable.

My LS2 is also noisy if I’m sitting upright and that’s how I ride. Ear plugs are required.

Still, I paid $150 on Amazon. It’s a comfortable fit. (Long oval) That means I’ll wear it. I think mine is a great value.

I’ve been wearing HJC modular helmets for years now, I’m on my third one. They just fit me well, it makes it easy to deal with wearing eye glasses and I like that it has an inner tinted sun visor that allows me to leave my sunglasses at home. The latch assembly is all metal ( not all Modular’s are ) which enhances the safety. Here in Arizona the sun can be so intensely bright that I also wear an optional dark smoke tinted outer visor, you might think that looking through two tinted visors would be too dark but no sir! 🌞 Not here.
