Hello folks. Very new to this forum. Can anyone tell me the length of the M6 bolt (No. 11 in the head tightening sequence) located just above the cam chain tensioner. I have just acquired a '78 special, and this bolt appears to be missing! I have multiple leaks and wanted to try a little retorque before going any further. Thanks

If memory serves, that's the little M6 Bolt at the rear of the head. No, idea, but easy to ascertain, stick a match down the hole mark it, then measure. Again from memory, it is quite short, take it easy torquing it or you'll strip the thread in the barrel.

Often as not that bolt is barely finger tight when I go in to retorque a barn find bike.
Debbie Downer sez; Check you still have room for a 35mm long bolt.
Blow the hole with an airgun and some thinner, mebby chase the threads with a tap.

Yes, the 77 XS650D I'm bringing back from the dead, the 6mm bolt was finger tight. The two 8mm bolts by the spark plugs weren't much more than finger tight. The larger dome nuts were found to be correctly torqued but I'll be tightening them again after the first couple of engine starts.

my torque spec on 6mm is a short grip on the wrench and an educated feel.
I'll second that. I use a 1/4" drive six side socket and wrench for that kind of job. Anything heavier duty is asking for trouble really. You get a good feel on smaller screws using 1/4" drive six sided socket and wrench. I use it with Allen screw bits too where required.

You prolly did, but yah gotta crack those head studs loose from the studs before torquing.
Yamaha states spec is nuts oiled.
