main fuse blows instanly without key in

just got hands on a 79xs650 special know nothing about it really but it ran when parked last year. i bought brand new sealed battery hooked it up and nothing. looked around for a little and noticed maine fuse was blown. replaced it and as soon as i put it in it blows again . Any ideas i really wanna hear my first bike run !
 
Oh yeah the fuse box just is sitting in there should it be mounted and or grounded somewhere
 
You've got a short to ground somewhere. Unless you have an meter, it's going to be difficult finding the problem (unless you can clearly see a bare wire contacting metail). I just went through this and needed a buddys help that had a meter to resolve. Mine turned out to be a bad bridge rectifier on my radio shack rectifier.

Trouble shooting electrical is just a slow step by step process. You first need a wiring diagram................manuals are good................the "Tech" section here has wiring diagrams. A VOM is a basic tool for these bikes.

With the key turned off, the main fuse only goes to 2 places, the rectifier and the ignition switch. Try unplugging the rectifier that lives under the battery. Otherwise look around the ignition switch.
 
If the plug for rectifier is below seat on left hand side when sitting on bike I disconnected and still blew fuse
 
Might be a dumb question, but is the battery hooked up right. Check to make sure the terminals are the same as the old batt.
 
haha prob not really a dumb question when dealing with me but yes it is hooked up right the negative terminal of battery is hooked to short cable that grounds itself almost immediately to the frame
 
also i see a lot of info stating radio shack rectifier etc. is it something i can pick up anywhere as long as it is the correct amp usage etc..
 
Going to work on bike today when i try unplugging rectifier will i show any signs of power to bike
 
Here is a little trick to use when trying to find shorts.
Solder a couple of wires, with clips on the ends, to a single filament turn signal bulb.
Clip this in place of the fuse.
It will light up bright when the short is there and dim down when you correct the short.
Saves all those fuses and gives you time to hunt.
 
Really lol i am gonna try to make my own i guess haha if i cant guess then i"ll spend the money thank you all for your help. also the previous owner is now telling me he was having charging trouble could this to be the rectifier?
 
just soldered to the new rectifiers but i am afraid i missed a big step i hadnt mounted them yet and worried maybe i should of so the rectifiers didt get hot when my slow ass worked on the solder?
 
if i don't run ground wire to the post it was bolted to on bottom of battery box where should i go with it?
 
Go to Harbor Freight and buy one of their cheap multimeters (a few dollars). Research this site for info on "zeroing" it out, etc. Lots of info here...just gotta look. Sounds like you should do a thorough testing of your entire charging system.

Also, if you go the combo rectifier/regulator route (from Mike's XS, for example), pay close attention to the wiring diagram you get with the part. Your 79 is a little different from most earlier and later year XS's.

Building your own rectifier is a whole lot cheaper than Mike's rec/reg combo.
