    I really enjoyed this thread!

    Let's See The XS's

629, I like that color. That's quite the backrest! Did you run into any rain? A good traveling accessory is a wet bag (dry bag?) - the kind used for boating & kayaking. They hold a lot of stuff, keep it dry, and make for a lower profile for your gear.

How to change the oil in your Harley

It's too bad, really. I think Harley's are kind of cool, but the company has created a monster with the way they market the brand, and it has been well-argued that those who have bought into the image are ironically participating in a comical contradiction. I wouldn't want to point to any...

    What is your XS worth?

 Yep. You can make things stop working on that car by just looking at it. Boats can be a royal pain, too. You've probably heard the saying, "The two happiest days in a boat owner's life are the day he bought it, and the day he sold it."

    What is your XS worth?

i bought my '77D for $300, and will probably have $2000 or more into it - that's without touching the engine. But I bought it to ride and because I like how it looks. I have no hope of making money on it. I've made a few bucks flipping cars over the years, but not bikes. My rule is: buy cheap...

    My '80 xs650 engine rebuild

Yikes! LOL, You could use them to tie your bike down if you ever trailer it. :) Good solution on the roller. More heavy duty for what you need on this project, but now you're prepared for anything.

Good Heart, Bad Intentions: another build thread

Good for you for making paper patterns and doing a test sewing. I'm planning to do the same thing, without ever having sewn anything but a few shirt buttons in my life, and being around my ex's while they did that stuff. But I'm not afraid to tackle it, and even bought a used heavy-duty sewing...

Anyone got a list of parts needed for a complete engine build ?

Brian, that was a good answer, worthy of keeping with a shop manual as a kind work plan or checklist.

    Cam Chain Guide/Mikesxs

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm cleaning up a '77 without touching the engine (24k on it), but I'm wondering if I should put one or two in stock for future top-end work.

    Let's See The XS's

Nice vision, Gr8day! How does it look now, do you have a "before" pic? I like what you did with the rims.

    Electrical connectors for rewire

I use weather pack for accessory add-ons when I can, but that's just because I worked in GM dealerships for years, and there's a tendency to unintentionally collect gobs of pins, seals, and connectors in your toolbox. I won't play innocent, I have to admit to conveniently not scooping them out...

    That was close!

At that speed, it could have been either brake, but since most of the weight transfers to the front when stopping (increasing tire-to-road friction, and reducing the weight on the rear), it's more likely that it was a rear skid. Font wheel skids are bad news, as it's hard to keep a front wheel...

Is '78 worth the cost of fixing?

Bill, welcome to the forum! Throwing money at the problem is sometimes a good strategy, but this won't end at the charging system. Try imagining the outcomes (I call it the taste test): Imagine how it would feel to not have it there? Is the bike haunting you in a way, like an obligation? Would...

^This. And try taking out the garbage once in a while (kidding!). :) I love to see spouses take an interest in what the other is doing!

LOL, I always imagined mine was saying, "I could kill you if I wanted to, you know that don't you?... Now give me a cookie!"

    What is this???

I've examined my 650D harness a couple of times (I have a box of mystery electronics to hook up), and my light checker connector looks just like yours, and is in the same location. The problem with guessing that this is the light checker connector is that all the diagrams show a yellow, a...

    Looking for a good mechanic

Need a lawyer? Forget it, with a few law books and Quicken Lawyer™ you can do it yourself. No offense intended - I'm just being facetious, but sometimes people don't have the time nor inclination to work on their own stuff. I was an automotive electronics tech for 15 years, and I hate working on...

    Engine off the frame

The two-ladder engine setup vid was done by I Am Carbon. I don't know which thread it's from, but I saw it on YouTube. I've had a crushed disk since I was a teenager, so I was quite interested in his setup. I don't have a chain hoist, but I have a cable "come-along" that would work. Edit: I...
