    Odd Clutch/transmission problem

Ok, So assuming I have to split the cases. Is there any reason I can't split the cases by turning the engine upside down after draining the oil and removing left and right covers and pull the bottom off the cases to get to the transmission. I've seen lots of rebuilds online where the cases...

    Odd Clutch/transmission problem

I have an 1979 Special, All stock. For a couple of months, I thought the clutch was slipping. In 1st gear under load, once I hit about 3000 RPM, the clutch appeared to slip, the rpms would climb suddenly without any bike movement but would catch again and off I went. It seems a little worse...

    Let's See The XS's

Here's a couple of my bike. Just finished it. Runs great, just waiting on some brushes to hopefully get it charging.

Step 7 on Expanded charging system guide

I'll put up a picture when I get home from work today. Going by memory, there is a powered brown that extends the furthest of the two wires and powers the inside ring, and the green which connects to the outside ring which receives its signal from the regulator/rectifier when to ground. Does...

Step 7 on Expanded charging system guide

Ok! So I did the test correctly this time on my rotor with three different multimeters and it's sitting at 4.7ohms. Which is certainly not optimal, but I would figure that this is still runnable? and certainly not the reason I'm not even charging a little bit. I'm guessing since it's not...

Step 7 on Expanded charging system guide

Looking at a set of brushes online leads me to believe the previous owner may have attempted to replace an old set of brushes with a salvaged set from an older stator. They look a lot like the ones from a pre 80 model. What affect would this have?

Step 7 on Expanded charging system guide

Thanks Leo, your message leads me to believe I've fried the fuse in my meter. First test gave a reading of 5.3 - .2 ohms = 5.1 ohms. After some fumbling around I probably wrecked the fuse as it no longer reads .2ohms when touching the leads together, just 0 no matter what I do.. My brushes...

Wanted - Rotor: 1980 and up

Looking for a rotor for my charging system, 80's and up, with the magnet for the pickup. Mine died and I don't want to cough up the dough for a PMA and a completely new ignition system. Just needs to test within operating tolerances. Message me if you have anything please!

Step 7 on Expanded charging system guide

Ok, so I took the stator off and cleaned up the rings and the ohm readings between rings is 0.00 Ohms? Did I do something wrong? don't these things usually weaken ? or can they just fry like that?

Step 7 on Expanded charging system guide

I'll lay it out step by step and hopefully someone can tell me if I've missed something. For my 1980 with stock TCI. Step 1: New fully charged battery. Step 2: Slap test, nothing, nothing at all. Tried jumping green from rec/reg combo and again nothing on slap test. Step 3: Bike warm up...

    PAMCO Ignition System

Gotcha, second question, I have a spare 79 engine with the advance rod. Can I install the 79 rod in the 80 engine or should I just buy a new one?

    PAMCO Ignition System

Sorry if this has been covered, but I have a 1980 xs650G. TCI, and I'm looking at replacing the entire charging system. I'm having a problem wrapping my head around the mechanical advance vs the E-advance. Do both options require the rod running through the cam? Is there any option to not...

1980 Stock Coil and plug caps

Sorry I've searched as much as possible on this site and others, but I have a fairly simple question. I have a 1980 XS650, stock TCI. Stock Coil and I was just going to buy some new plugs, I'm not sure they are making the BP7ES anymore as all I can find it the resister type. Which is...

    some wiring diagrams

Hope someone wouldn't mind looking at my wiring diagram. Specifically the the Power to Coils part. I wanted to run a very small, micro button kill switch and I was worried about burning it out, so I thought a relay would do the trick and I could power the coils through my relay and kill power...

    Solenoid wiring

I'm about to start wiring up a bike I've been building for a while now. I've photoshopped up a diagram for my '80 XS650 which I've attached below which should work fine, but the problem is I bought the bike from some kid and the starter solenoid has 3 posts instead of 4. I'm a little green...

Thanks for the critique retiredgentleman, I've made some changes based on your input and was hoping you and anyone else can chime in and let me know if you see anything worth being worried about.

    some wiring diagrams

I'm hoping someone can have a look at this diagram. I've cut and pasted from others in the thread. 80 SG stock ignition, with starter. I'll be using a fuse block as I like how tidy it is. Can anyone see any problems with the diagram? any suggestions?
