    Cheap piston sets on ebay

I wanted to give an update. It's been a year and the bike has run absolutely fantastic. The pistons are A-OK in my book.

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

I just wanted to close out this thread with a big thank you for everyone's help. In the end I'm now running '78 carbs on my '80. Having an adjustable needle is nice. It's in middle position. Pilot is a 32.5 (stock is 27.5) Main is a 140 (stock is 135) and mixture screw is 2-5/8 turns and my...

Head acorn nuts always need retorqued

I've built 2 other engines this year and I think the torque is giving me good numbers. All the other bolts on the head are always correctly torqued and never need tightened, just the acorns. I'll put some anti-seize on, and try again. Report back.

Head acorn nuts always need retorqued

I've got a freshly rebuilt top end. I have run through a series of torques and break ins. I replaced the 4 outer washers with thicker copper washers. The inners are still steel. I checked the compression recently and was getting 120 left, 140 right, so I decided to do another torque and valve...

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

oook I went on a bit of a ride today in the twisties, not much over 1/4 throttle. It runs fantastic. I have the 1 step up from stock 30 pilot. The needle was one step leaner than stock (1 clip from top). I started with 2-3/4 turns out but it remained lean all afternoon. Every 10 minutes I...

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

Those are the same ones I've used for 8 years, how I didn't have issues before boggles my mind. So PK-82 or UP4200, I know you use the longer UP4200. Any reason why? I can't seem to find any comparison threads.

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

HOLY SHIT! I took the filters off and the midrange stutter is gone gone GONE! It runs like a demon now! I definitely will be spending some cash for some UNIs and I'll pop the 30 pilot in this saturday when it comes. Thanks for all the help fellas!

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

So I don't quite understand what's going on. Dropping the needle I expected to make a lean condition, but everything I see it seems to be richer. I've adjusted the mix screw from 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 and 2-3/4 and that made it worse, and down to 1-1/2, that was bad too. My plugs look wet to me. Me...

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

I ordered 30 pilots, and in the meantime lowered the needle one clip (raised the clip to next to highest position). Wow, what a difference that made. The bike is completely unrideable now. Very bad stutter on take off. The stutter made me think it was somehow richer, but that can't be right...

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

Great info, that's an easy enough thing, it's nice to have adjustable needles again. New pilots and move the needle down all the way. Maybe get some Uni filters too.

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

I'm all for shit talk! Well KOP I'm giving in to the pods/cv shortcomings. I rebuilt the 78 carbs I was given and managed to get them on. Started right up. I swear it sounds a hell of a lot stronger, but it still suffers from the midrange stutter. It's running the stock 27.5 pilot and 2 sizes...

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

There's a lot of shit talk in that post, isn't there. Anyway I rode with these same pods and carbs for 8 years with no problem. I bought it with them. No midrange issues. Quick take offs, high speeds, great curvy road acceleration. I'm just now having issues.

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

Yeh, with screw all the way in, it still putters midrange. I feel it is a bit better, but still sputters. Guess I'll get some jets, maybe try the 78 carbs.

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

It's running pods, but yes, they are on. Unfortunately I dont have either stock jet so another week for an order to come in. It runs great except for heavy acceleration or mid throttle. i probably could just zip around town like it is. I'm assuming the non epa mixture screw is letting in a lot...

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

Ok I decided to pull the carbs off yet again and be very anal with the float level. I pulled the gasket off instead of estimating it being .5mm, and did it off the carb surface. I favored 23mm. It seems to have fixed my initial smokiness. So I think I'm jetted rich. I did a test ride with...

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

Ok it's been a few weeks. I got the (non epa?) mixture screws from scabber, thanks! Again bike is a 1980. I think a big problem was a loose connection at the ignition switch. I tightened that and no more sputtering. BUT I went through the carbs again before that. I got a M6 X .5 tap to clean...

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

I confirmed on a few other sites that Mikuni air screws are M6 X .5 And I want to use a BOTTOMING tap so as no to make new threads anywhere http://www.amazon.com/High-Speed-Steel-Bottoming-Tap/dp/B0006G4MDY

    oh no, definitely not M6 X 1, I think M6 X.5 ???? M6X.5 tap

    Jetting issues after head rebuild

Thanks again Scabber! I'm guessing the screw is M6 X .5 mm. It looks the same diameter as my M6X1 tap, my thread measuring tool says .5, and the M6 tap's threads perfectly match every other thread on the screw... sound right?
