What would you classify this as?

I've been looking at this particular bike for awhile as my inspiration. I've shown friends, some of them call it a cafe, others a tracker, what would you say? Link here for more pictures of this bike!

    Wanted - 650 Parts in Germany/Europe

I am currently stationed in Germany. I was working on a project back in the states, but left it there. I regret this decision horribly right now. Anyway, I am looking for something to get started on again(I hadn't made much progress anyways). So I would like to find an engine possibly, or a...

    Could it be my brushes?

I haven't been out and looking at my bike in a while. But it is backfiring when I try to start it. I know the headlight should turn on after a good kick. Mine does not. I have a 1980 XS650, replaced the motor with that of a 74 or 79 I believe(can't remember off hand). The motor I...

    Lessons in Kickstarting...

Up until I got this bike, I had never kick started anything but a 200cc two stroke. I've never had a problem starting that, no matter where I kicked it from. I have been told and read on here to lightly kick it around until it is towards the top of the compression stroke. Well apparently...

    1 petcock, vs 2

From what I have gathered the older bikes had 2 petcocks with a fuel line going to each carb, whereas the newer bikes have only one, and the line T's off(like mine). Are there advantages to either set up?

    Nervous about brakes...

My rear brake seems fine although I do plan on looking at it a bit closer I do not want it to go out on me. It is my front brake that I worry about. The pain is gone on the fender underneath one of the brake lines. So for the time being I have no front brake. I am new to brake work other...

It ran, but it won't start again?

I got my bike started for the first time the other day, I also got it started today. I cannot get it started again now to save my life. There is fuel, the battery has voltage, fuses are all good. I really don't know why it won't start, any suggestions?

    Rebuild or Used motor?

The past few days I've spent tearing apart the motor for my bike. I discovered that I dropped a valve at some point and destroyed my piston, and heads. My question is which is the better option. Do I rebuild what I have, or buy a used motor? I am somewhat tight on money, not terribly, but...

    Wanted - 650 Motor for 1980 Special Western/Southwestern MI

I've been tearing into my bike and discovered I would need to completely rebuild my motor, which I don't really have time(or experience) for at the moment. So I was wondering if anyone had any motors they were looking to get rid of, or if you knew of any. Thanks everyone, it's much...

    Breaker housing removal?

I am in the process of pulling apart the motor for my bike, and I am trying to follow the manual, but the pictures are not that good, and I am not sure what I am supposed to be doing.. I was trying to take a picture but my camera was in my car and won't turn on. It says its too hot. Anyway...

Engine Pulled how to support it?

I just finished pulling the motor. I cannot keep it balanced enough to work on it. What have you guys done to keep the motor standing straight up to work on the top end?? Much appreciated, Dave

    Stock Color? Painting Plastic?

It's there a way to determine the factory color of my bike? It looks to have been painted a few times and I want sure what color it would have been. Also, any advice on painting the front fender and side covers that are plastic?

    My First Project

Just picked up my 1980 XS 650 yesterday. It's got about 12,500 miles on it. It has been sitting in my dads barn for about 4 years. I have almost all the parts except the air boxes. The motor is seized up so my goal first off is to figure out what I need as far as that is concerned. The...

New to the XS 650 and motorcycles in general

Hey everyone I am new to the forum. I've been looking at getting a motorcycle for a while couldn't really afford anything nice. My dad had a 650 in his barn that he said if I can fix it I can have it. So I scrounged around and found the parts he had laying around, took it to my house and I'm...
