    Are their any good vibrations?

About the bar material. At the time I filled the clubman bars with cement (because they have acute bends that prevent anything other than liquid) I also filled a small plastic pill vile with the cement mixture. I wanted to see if it set up hard in the absence of air. Today about 2 weeks after...

    Are their any good vibrations?

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I will try to address some. About the cement in the bars: mine are clubmans and could not use the steel bolts and silicone I used in my drag bars. I think it is mass you want to deaden vibration. Balance engine: just finished that, bench sycro followed by vacuum...

    Are their any good vibrations?

Yes, but they are not on a xs650! Last year I took the old girl on a 1000,km tour and shook my old bones and wrecked a gps unit with the vibrations. The cure I know is a bmw but I can't let go of my old 650. I plan another trip next summer and am doing what I can to reduce vibrations. Here is...

    screw adjust vacum carb xs650e

Azman: That sounded like a good idea. I had an old long shaft screwdriver and I tried it from the kick start side and can see that with a rounded blade it would work. Going to buy a 8-9 inch screwdriver. Got my tubing for the vacuum test, just need the glass bottles now. I could use plastic...

    screw adjust vacum carb xs650e

That screw is a lot like a lot of other things in life - you can see it clearly but you can't get it. It looks like the best way to it is from the kick start side with that $30 90 degree driver. But to be able to do it fast and anytime would be worth a lot to me. What the hell, throw the cat...

    screw adjust vacum carb xs650e

Hi all been ages, old girl running not bad. However going to balance the carbs using vacuum bottles. Carbs are 38s on a xs650e.stock. Question: Anyone come up with a way to turn the adjusting screw between the carbs WITHOUT removing the tank? Bit of a pain to take off the tank and rig a fuel...

    ground cable relocate

In hopes that this will help someone who is struggling with ignition, lighting, starter problems. My 1978e has had all the above issues till I traced it down to the ground connection to the frame. The original location on my bike was, as shown by the arrow, the bolt that holds the air filter...

    pamco timing problem

Funny, even with a new cam chain it is the same problem. Can I file the backing plate to get more clockwise?

Ops, so sorry. I did mean clockwise. Brain fart.

    pamco timing problem

Very pleased with the system. However, I can not rotate the backing plate enough counter clockwise to advance the timing enough. With the plate at max counter clockwise I can get within 3/4 of an inch from perfect time. Question: can I file the slot enough to get more counter clockwise...

    OHV chain, maybe?

Bike now on the road and running fine. Burns clean and no oil leaks. Here, if the picture comes up, is the nut breaker I used for the link on the cam chain. It allows good control over just where you position the cutting edges to get the link just right.

1978 XS - Cold left cylinder/Hot right cylinder

I have a '78. Left pipe was hot right cold. took carbs off and had another go at the butterfly sync. Then right pipe hot left cool but not cold. Also had an air leak in the rubber flange between the carb and head. Filed head at inlet flat and surface sanded the flange and used sealant. Happy...

    OHV chain, maybe?

All is well. Idles fine, both pipes hot, driveable. Sucked air around flange for mounting carb. Pics as promised.

    left cylinder runs too cool

Bingo! Must have been sucking air around the mounting flange. When I filed the head flange the high spots were around the screw holes as I found out from another post. Gotta love this site. Going to make up a balancer for the carbs next but idles well, both exhausts are warm all in all its...

    left cylinder runs too cool

Took off carbs, sync was out by sight. Took off rubber ring and carb mount, filed high spots off head mating flange, reassembled with sealant. Checked valve clearance, good. We shall see.

    left cylinder runs too cool

Will check clearances again, but just did compression check and it is 130psi. Took off vacuum line going to fuel shut off valve and used that point to hold a propane torch as a gas supply - increased rpm and hotter pipe. Fast idle and cold left side pipe, could this be same problem or two...

    left cylinder runs too cool

Only have one bike '78. Update: Checked timing, right on. New plugs. Interesting, with the air filters off and the bike running, if you put your hand over the inlet for the right (good one) cylinder it stalls the bike and you can feel a strong intake of air on your hand. If you do the...

    left cylinder runs too cool

Just did cam chain, head gasket, rings valves etc on top end. Got it back together and running tonight. Burns clean with no smoke or oil leaks. The problem is the left cylinder runs cool, you can hold your hand over the exhaust and it is cool, not so with the right cylinder gases are hot...
