    Semi-generic carb theory question

Update. Installed new coils to replace the 50 year old originals, disassembled and cleaned the ignition switch contacts, and cleaned all the connections associated with the coils, points and condensers. Damn! Runs like a new bike- will idle all day long, the electric starter actually fires it...

    Poor battery charging, next steps?

Update- installed a cheap Amazon voltmeter and got some real numbers while riding. With the headlight off, the readings are what I would describe as "normal"- I get up to 14.2V at 3000 rpm. But with the headlight on, I'm seeing a max of 12.6 or so at speed, it drops to 11 and change below...

    Poor battery charging, next steps?

That's the next step if I can't get things right with a proper adjustable VR. I've got a handful of solid state VR115 regulators hanging around as we collect and restore AMC/Nash vehicles.

    Poor battery charging, next steps?

Just gambled $10 on a candidate from Ebay, but don't go anywhere;)

    Poor battery charging, next steps?

Yeesh- looking around on Ebay, a whole lot of safety relays are being advertised as VR's ...

    Yep, just verified.

    Poor battery charging, next steps?

Could be- it really doesn't lend itself to bending with any degree of precision, short arm and stout material. This is irritating as I've been dealing with, setting and adjusting mechanical VR's in automotive applications for over 50 years, 6v, 12v, generators, alternators. This bike has...

    Poor battery charging, next steps?

No, it just holds the assembly together and makes a connection- it's well insulated from the regulator chassis.

    Poor battery charging, next steps?

Another view of what I think is the VR- no adjusting screw ...

    Poor battery charging, next steps?

Oof. It's hard for me to tell, but it looks like the regulator in your pic with the big green ballast resistor is mounted on the left side of the bike. That is where what I thought is my regulator is also mounted. See pic. However, my manual shows the regulator mounted on the right side of...

    Poor battery charging, next steps?

I barely get over 13V above 3500 rpm and higher. My regulator is stock mechanical, but does not have the adjustment screws to vary the output. Battery is one year old, will hold a full charge overnight. My rotor slip rings are clean, resistance between the rings is 6.5 "hot"(after a 5 mile...

    Semi-generic carb theory question

5Twins, I think you are spot-on. I put the new coils on and had no spark on one side afterwards- I had power to the new coils, the issue was somewhere between the points and the coil, a bit of connection cleaning brought the spark back. I also determined that the battery was down a bit, so a...

    Semi-generic carb theory question

Carbs are synched via the dead cyl method. All other tune up specs spot on. I'm starting to look to the coils, they're original, and they've gotten hot in the past. Problem seem to kick in after about 10 mins of riding/idling. New coils on the way.

    Semi-generic carb theory question

Hmmm. Too much info? Too little? Would a video of what I'm experiencing help elicit a comment or 2? Thanks!

    Semi-generic carb theory question

So a little back story. I've had my '74 a little over 10 years now, riding semi regularly for 9 of those (did a quickie teardown/restore/paint/polish when I first got it). Been following the forum all that time, and have gleaned scads (technical term) of information and help over the years on...

    crank only rotates 340 degrees

Ooof- she's been run hard and put away wet, for sure. Re: your 340 degrees of rotation in each direction and a dead stop? I see you overcame it, but I had the exact same thing happen a few years back on an outboard motor. Piston skirt broke, chunks got into the cylinder and the motor did the...

    Voltage regulator alternative?

I just 10 minutes ago found one in my stock, probably pulled from one of my old AMC's. But thanks! I didn't see any under $30 on Ebay when I looked the other day.

    Voltage regulator alternative?

It's a '67. '66 taillights are longer and not as tall, otherwise pretty much identical.
