You're entirely correct Rustie. I remember it now. Let me know if you have any luck finding a clip or two. Thanks again.

    Metric circlips who knew

That's fantastic man. Really appreciated. If you don't mind me asking another question, I've seen references to Metric while I've been hunting. I thought these bikes were cooked up in Japan and I know they used a peculiar sort of metric for fasteners/drivers etc. can you enlighten me on this...

    Metric circlips who knew

Hi Mikey. I have the same problem and I've thrown hundred$ at the problem to no avail. I ordered that infamous circlip from my local dealer but it's not available until mid November. Does your dealer have them in stock? Best, Patrick

Pete! God bless your Dad. 3-Way switches suck. Ha! I can build a house from the dirt hole up but I can't figure out three way switches.

Hey Mailman. I figure we have all put that ubiquitous POS on our bikes at one time or another. Too funny. Lets make sure Pete doesn't put it on his!

Thanks to Pete for re-activating me on this forum. I look forward to watching you cross the finish line on this build. Can I ask the indulgence of the folks here in helping me identify the origin of this little fairing? I trimmed the upper and lower wings a few inches and cut the windshield into...

    Kick start spin-out

Thanks gmiller for such a quick reply. As it turns out, the spring is fine but the kick-start lever was fouling on the foot-peg arm, preventing its return. I put on Omars "ugly plates" and there was too thick of a washer installed behind it, pushing out the foot-peg arm too far. Problem...

    Kick start spin-out

Funny thing happened on the way to work today. My battery was a bit run down so I gave it a bit of help kicking with my foot and the engine started right up. No problem. Except that on the first decent right turn I was startled by a scraping sound and stopped the bike. Fearing the exhaust has...

    charging system help

Bit late for that. My next challenge is a weak clutch. Revving it hard results in slippage and also I experience what feels like fuel starvation. Is there no end to the xs650 learning curve?:wtf:

    charging system help

Well I finally got my new rotor from Electrosport and took it to my local shop. These are the guys who told me my old rotor was fried. Turns out the old rotor was in rough shape but serviceable. It was the stator that was pooched. Thanks guys! Great friggin advice. Ten days later and with a...

    charging system help

Barkcollar, I'm not much with the electrical system. Do you remember what was involved in checking the alternator for a bad ground? Thanks for the tip! Dennis, that sounds ominous! It's been over a week since I ordered the rotor and I've not received a shipping notification yet, even though I...

    charging system help

I found a NEW rotor on www.electrosport.com for $139. It's said to be superior to the OE part with magnets built in for the later electronic ignition models as well. It comes with a one year warranty and there's no shipping the old one so I'm happy. Just waiting for delivery now. I'll report...

    charging system help

Hey pamcopete, thanks for the offer! No problems crossing the border it's just that with shipping charges back and forth, and Revenue Canada taking a bite out of me when the thing arrives at the post office or my door, I think I'll play the wait and see game with my local supplier. They say...

    charging system help

I've heard that www.Regulatorrectifier.com has rebuilts for $150. They'll pay for the shipping of the core but I'm in Canada and don't know if I qualify for this. Anyone familiar with this company and it's products?

    charging system help

Thank you pamcopete and Craig. Good advice all. I will do these things and hope to find a working rotor eventually. My mechanic checked it out and confirmed it's the rotor. So assuming that's ALL it is, the solution is pretty straightforward.
