Advance bob weights and springs question?

OK, I've got some spring info for you. The total length appears to be just under 22mm. Length of just the spring coils is about 10mm, they have a diameter of about 5.6mm, and there are 10 of them. The wire diameter or thickness is .75 to .80mm and the hooks on the ends are bent out at 90° to one...

Stock Carbs - Is Float Height Setting Tied to Carb or Bike?

Then you used the wrong spec, lol. That's why you had to bend the tang so much. The plastic float spec is 22mm ± 1mm. That 27.3mm spec is for the brass floats used in the 1980 model only. Unfortunately, the manuals didn't catch up with the carb change until several years later. Many still show...

    Phantom 78 650 rebuild Part 2

You measure the diameter of the hole in the banjo, or the diameter of the banjo bolt. But, the 650 uses M10 banjos and banjo bolts, and most of the lines for sale on eBay are that size. It's probably about the most common metric size.

Advance bob weights and springs question?

These are the replacement e-clips I've been using. They fit and work well. So far, I haven't had one fail. It's handy to have extras on hand because sometimes an original will break when you try to remove it, or fling off across the garage never to be seen again, lol. For a few dollars, you can...

Advance bob weights and springs question?

I have some N.O.S. originals I could measure. Managed to find them on eBay. The originals on my bike are a bit loose and sloppy but still seem to work fine. I do keep the advance rod well lubed, which I'm sure helps.

    Standard vs Special Headlight Brackets

I plan on swapping Standard ears onto my Special to gain more room for cable routing. I'd like to swap in an XS850 triple headlight bucket at the same time as well. I think it may have more room inside for wiring.

    Clutch push-rod seal

Yes, it's 36mm. Another size you may want to get is 27mm, for the oil drain plugs and rear axle. Front axle is a 22mm.

    Clutch push-rod seal

The early models actually spec it a little tighter, 94 ft/lbs. That's what I use and it seals well. I started out using about 72 ft/lbs I think. I didn't get drips but there were always oil streaks on the sprocket emanating from the shaft. Upping the torque to 94 eliminated them ...... Since...

    Engine Oil

I usually fill mine to the upper line. Check and verify the level using the dip stick because as I mentioned earlier, the window isn't always accurate. Also make sure the bike is on level ground. Those long dome nuts are part of the fastener pattern that holds the crankcase halves together...

1979 XS 650 idles fine , falls flat just off idle, carb is clean.

The best springs are originals but they're not available anymore. However, they do come up on eBay from time to time, so I'd start watching. But, if you grease up those bushings real good, your current springs may be fine. If not, and you're going to clip them, only do one to start as that may...

1979 XS 650 idles fine , falls flat just off idle, carb is clean.

Once you remove that notched ring, the advance unit backing plate should just slide off the end of the cam. But, being that all these parts are just raw steel, there's a good chance things are rusted together. Put some penetrating oil on there and let it soak overnight. Then, warming the area up...

1979 XS 650 idles fine , falls flat just off idle, carb is clean.

The cam has a couple bushings in each end for the advance rod to ride in. The outside bushing should have grooves cut into it's I.D. ..... They are there to retain grease and provide a reservoir of lube for the advance rod. Clean any old hardened grease out and pack them with fresh stuff. The...

    Engine Oil

You'll often find the drain plugs really tight the first time you go to remove them because the P.O. never changed out their seal rings. Instead, he just made them super tight in hopes of sealing them up, which probably didn't work, lol. Have some new seal rings on hand because you're going to...

    Oil Filters

Yes, just standard dot3 brake fluid, but if you want a bit better (higher boiling point), you can use dot4. Don't use the silicone based dot5, not worth the extra money and a hassle to install the first time (must totally flush and clean the system of all dot3/4).

    Engine Oil

You'll need to buy 3 quarts as 2 won't be enough. I dump in 2 then about 1/4 to 1/2 of the 3rd, depending how much it needs to fill the sight glass. I have the sight glass side covers on both of mine. My '83 came factory equipped with one and I retro-fitted one to my '78. I like them even though...

    Old style drum front wheel

In the later '80s, Yamaha retroed the SR500 by fitting a drum front brake. To anchor it, they simply made a bolt-on part that attached to the disc brake mounts. You can get one from here ...

And for my next trick ....

You can actually do your first torque check after the motor is assembled and has sat at least overnight, before it's even been run. You will most likely find a few loose fasteners due to some initial new gasket compression.

    Cleaning stand

There are cheaper Chinese versions available from eBay but I've heard they can have issues with the screw stripping out. I don't regret paying more for mine. Like I said, I consider it one of the best motorcycle tool investments I've made.

And for my next trick ....

Yes, new chains are very tight so you will most likely need to do as you have to get the ends to mate up and get the master link in. I have a plastic jar full of spacers cut from old handlebars I made up special just for this. Once you've run the engine, the new chain will loosen up rather...
