    Where to start!

Howdy, how's it way out west? Congrats on getting the XS. You've already dived in and begun work on it. When I've gotten an unknown history bike I do the regular maintenance, changing oil, checking brake fluid, chain condition, lube and adjust. Check front & rear brakes for operation, lube...

It's Bikes, Blues And BBQ Here

That is going to be a great trip, I envy:) Many years back I took my wife on a trip all the way from S.W. Kentucky to Cumberland Gap, all on back roads. Ran out of gas somewhere(?) but a beat up old pickup with a bunch of overall wearing kids in the bed stopped and gave me a half gallon of gas...

It's Bikes, Blues And BBQ Here

Last year the Fall colors were the most brilliant I've seen here. Too bad B.B.&BBQ can't be a little later in the Fall. Eureka Springs is one of several trips the B.B.&BBQ organizers lead. Except for the "super slabs" just about all roads here in N.W. Arkansas are great for riding but watch for...

It's Bikes, Blues And BBQ Here

Not really here, down the road in Fayetteville. You can't throw a rock in any direction w/o hitting a biker, that pisses 'em off. Looks like every biker in the world, except those of us on line, are having a ball. I'm spending my time trying to figger out where the electricity for my...

Nephew's Royal Star, He dropped it

When I was a bone-skinny, less than a hundred pounds teenager my dad gave me a 1953 Chief, it's a wonder it did not turn me against motorcycles.

Nephew's Royal Star, He dropped it

Amazing bike. He brought it over for me to see Thursday. All the gadgets included. He dropped it going down my drive onto the dirt road, serious scratches:( Sad to see him so proud of his machine get dumped by my very tricky driveway. It's not easy for beginners on bikes

    Good deal?

You're in luck, bank's closed so no $$ 'til Monday so you got it:D Everything I own is a project in progress, everything... Buying another bike would be tossin' another brick on my load:( Since it does run it's prolly worth the price. Good luck, I'm sure you'll have fun w/it

    Good deal?

Thanks for posting the pics Rider. Bikes in that condition scare me off, I prefer to start with them all in one piece, running a +. If the bike I'm looking to buy will not run everything the PO says is wind if he can't show me. Bottom line, make your best estimate of what repairs will cost and...

    Cylinder Dilemma

Yes sir, that's back when people re-grooved their bald tires to get a few hundred more miles from them. The tool made ominous popping sounds as it cut through the top ply of fabric.

    Sputtered and stopped running :(

Thanks for posting what the prob was, I am always curious how things work out on these old bikes. At least it was not the side stand switch

    Sputtered and stopped running :(

I may as well toss in a guess of my own. After you check out everything else try checking the fuel directly from the tank. May as well look for c.r.u.d. at the starting point of the fuel system. As mentioned by smokedyerstang the petcock and filters would be next. Basically, you need air, fuel...

1981 XS650 Master Cyl Chocolate Milk

Yes, everything soaked, dripping. I'll try to find any areas in the cylinder that may be sticking, rough or , & try polishing as suggested earlier. Doing this on the cheap can be other than fun.

1981 XS650 Master Cyl Chocolate Milk

The forceps got it, thank you!!! Now, the rubber cap that goes over the spring where the piston butts against it apparently turned sideways, that was after I held the whole assy vertical and put it together in a "stack", am I having the same probs as everyone else or am I the Lone Ranger here...

1981 XS650 Master Cyl Chocolate Milk

That's what they called alligator clips, small easy to clip inside clothes and could hang decorations by the little screw, but of course I only heard about that stuff :D I have forceps laying next to my retainer clip pliers, gonna try it.

1981 XS650 Master Cyl Chocolate Milk

LOL patience? Thanks for the tip about Mike's! Only lately have I begun to have any patience. Since my wife can't do anything for herself anymore I've realized that everything can wait 'til after I fulfill my responsibilities, no biggie. Shift motor on the Ford Explorer transfer case, next...

1981 XS650 Master Cyl Chocolate Milk

Hi Gary, One question b4 I take a sawsall to it, How do you deal with the retaining ring/clip that is waaay too deep for my snap ring pliers? All 4 of mine are to short. A friend took the original one out for me but he's a mechanic and I cannot keep imposing on our friendship. He had to hammer...
